routine maintenance on used truck
routine maintenance on used truck
I just bought a used 99 f-150 reg cab 4x4 with the 5.4. The guy i bought it from is a friend of mine and i believe he kept good care of it but not sure. He worked at a ford dealership and i think he had most of his tune-ups/oil changes and things of that nature done there. I changed the front rotors and pads the day after i bought the truck. Other than that i haven't done anything except the routine 3000 mile oil change and tire rotations every 6000. Should i go ahead and give the truck a tune up since i dont know what he's had done lately. What all would you reccommend?? What should be done first?? Basically what should my tune-up consist of...
I would start with a fuel/air filter and pcv valve since they are usually inexpensive and easy. From there, I would change the trans/t-case fluid. If you haven't done so already while doing the brakes, bleed the system. If you have any beer left over, you may want to change the fluid in the front and rear differentials. Once you have completed that, there is always things like, power steering fluid, coolant flush, new plugs, wires, cleaning throttle body, and checking out the rear brakes.
I would replace all belts and hoses and the thermostat while your in there. A fuel injector service (most dealers clean the throttle body as well) would be a good idea. I would get the tie rod ends and ball joints inspected also if it has more than 60-70k miles on it.

whenever i get something used i give it the "once over"

inspect the chassis and exhaust
check all the u-joints..grease as needed
just so YOU know its been done
good luck

There are 117000 miles on the truck. I just had the coolant flushed. The brake system has been bled. Just cleaned and re-oiled the K&N drop in filter. I'm guessin it wouldnt hurt to change the plugs and wires. Not sure if they've been done. I'm about to drop the truck off at my favorite front end mechanic due to a loud, pesky squeak on the front passengers side so he'll be able to give the front end a "once over". How much would a fuel injector service run me? Any other routine maintenance besides the lil stuff y'all mentioned?
