Fuel Pump Won't Prime All the Time
Fuel Pump Won't Prime All the Time
Help!
On warm days after driving a bit and stopping I get back in and it won't start.
I can not hear the pump prime so after a little time I would hear the pump prime and the truck would start right up with no other problems? I have checked the following things
1. Pump relay and replace both relays
2. inertia switch
3. Fuel pressure
4. Have power to the pump
5. PATS system
6. Fuel Filter
WHAT'S NEXT!
Please Help I need too fix this problem
Thanks

I got a new pump today and I will be installing it tomorrow by myself, should I drop tank it's has a 1/4 tank of fuel, and do I need to jack up all four corners or can it be done on the ground?
Thanks

It's a job - 5 hours using a forklift for me.
I got the tank bone dry....siphon if you need to. Is gas 15# or so a gallon - 1/4 tank = 60# - 70 #??
I drove the rears up on ramps....about 7" ....was enough with my 4" lowered rear .... and I'm pretty big.
Go to Auto Zone and buy a fuel line tool $ 4.99 - 5/16 x 3/8 size, and a gallon of that orange hand cleaner stuff ( maybe 2 gallons ).
The pump out flow hose is 3/8, and the return is 5/16.
You really need to lower the tank in stages to disconnect hoses as you go down, and reconnect as you go up.... floor jack and a *board* to protect the tank bottom.
You get about 1 1/2" of slack out of the strap bolts.
I would suggest that you use duct tape or similiar on the filler hose and vent hose as they will drag on the frame as you go back up, and dump chit in the tank.
I wasted nearly half an hour trying to figure out how the electrical connection at the top rear comes off........ it turns a quarter turn and pops right out..... one of those " warpy washer " gizmos.
One of the vent hoses is easier to access from in front of the tire, and has your typical plier removable hose clamp....another at top rear...easy.
It just ocurred to me that these two may turn and pop out too - try it.
Pump removal and pump to bracket, etc is easy.
I was surprised that the pump bottom contacted the bottom of the tank when I re-installed, but it's O.K. as the filter has a plastic grid inside which maintains flow.....could be tough if the tank bottom was dented by a floor jack.
Hope this helps....LOL

I never had to replace mine but often thought about if i did would it be possible to use a cutting disk and remove a square piece of the floor in the bed above the pump to remove it from the top without dropping the tank.
FORD should do this from the factory, with a removable panel, but i thought i could make my own removable panel.

Well its done, new fuel pump installed. Started at 7:00am and finish at 11:00am. It was not an easy job for one man. Now time will tell if this fixes my problem or not. I would like to thank you all for your help and patience with me.
