Question What Kind Of Oil?

I have a 99 4x4 with 145k and starting to hear a slight lifter tapping until engine warms up. In saying this, what would be the best oil to use...weight? 5w30, 10w40 or 20w50? Im currently using 5w30. Or is there something better out there?

With that many miles I'd switch to a 10w30 or 10w40 at least. Try and stay with the same brand if possible. OR there are several high mileage oils out there. I've never tried them but in theory they are designed for the increased wear and clearances that a high mileage engine has obtained. Good luck..

It has 145K on it so why change what your doing.....stick with what you currently use and don't worry!

I would stick with what you're using now. Seems to be working just fine!

Up it to 10w30, maybe even a high mileage 10w30. It'll help no doubt.

On the next oil change try a different weight. If it don't help you can switch back.

My 95 351 was starting to make a littlke tappet noise and was also using a bit of oil. I went from 5w30 to 10w40. Consumtion is way down and noise is gone. I don't have real cold winters here which is a consideration for heavier oil weights. The last consumer report i read said quaker state was now one of the best non synthetics on the market with lowest sulfur better freeze and flash points etc...They had some bad oil on the market years ago which caused gumming up but they have corrected that a long time ago.
