4.2 to 5.4
new member!
i have a 4.2 V6 manual trans w/OD in my 2000 F150 XL.
would like to upgrade to a 4.6 or 5.4 V8.
which of these engines will bolt/or if possible to bolt on to my existing trans.
i'm emotionally attached to it and dont want to purchase a new one.
its been loyal to me for the past 6 years ive owned it (purchased it in 99). has not given me a single problem since then! believe it or not!
Talk about AMERICAN ENGINEERING! help is greatly appreciated.

Is the desire to have a 4.6 or 5.4 a "what the hell" kind of desire or a "I have to have it because I'm now pulling a 32' Pierson" kind of desire?
In either case, I'd get a new truck. Plus, that money spent on a new engine could be better used as a down payment. This is of course IMHO and I have no idea what kind of sentimental attachment you have to your truck!
Your 5-speed manual tranny for the 4.2 would work with a 4.6 V8 but, from what I know, will NOT work (or is not RECOMMENDED for) a 5.4 V8.
So, in other words, going with a 4.6 engine, you're going to have the same ratios 1st - 5th and only a 30hp gain and 40lb-ft of torque.
So, if you're gonna get a 4.6, get a chip instead.
If you're gonna blow money on a new engine, get a new 5.4 engine and tranny to match so that you'll at least have a 60hp boost and 100 torque boost.

I have to disagree there.
Going with the 4.6 would be quite an improvement IMO. But as he mentioned, going to the 5.4 is hard on the M50D, as its not made to handle alot of torque so you have to be careful with it if you go with a 5.4L.
