1999 5.4 VIN L Engine Swap

First off I am new to this board. I have been looking around for an engine and I guess I was looking for a direct swap out so I wouldn't have to worry about things not aligning or working correctly. But I have seen many other engines that could possibly work that are not exact replacements. My 1999 F-150 4X4's engine locked because of lack of oil. How it lost 5 quarts of oil between a 3500 mile oil change is beyond me but anyway it is dead. And it can't even be turned over so it's locked. What are my options? I know the two-wheel version has a little extra horsepower and the Lightning engine would take quite a few extras to get it going but how about Excursion engines as well? I will be taking this on myself so I am mechanically inclined but I wanted to know if all the 1999 and above engines will bolt up correctly. Or from my searching is it 1999 to 2003 that work out best?
Thanks,
Bryan

The 2-wheel drive version has more power? I think you may be thinking of PI vs. non-PI 5.4's.

5.4

Actually just wondering if the regular two-wheel version will just bolt right into a four-wheel drive truck without a problem.

Expedition

Will a 1999 Expedition 5.4 fit into a 1999 F-150 4X4 with a 5.4?????
Just want to know which engines I can fit into this thing so I can get going again. I have to get the kid down the street to haul my trailer and car to the track every week now since my truck died. Thank goodness the season is almost over. Any information would be helpful.

I've neve done it so I don't know for sure.

I believe what you have to look for is wether you have an engine built in the Romeo plant or the Windsor plant. I'm pretty sure that there are differences between the two. I can't think of any reason an Expy engine couldn't be installed in the pick-up. I don't think there was any changes made that effect fittment from 99-03. You'll want the PCM that goes with the engine you install.

You should pull the ECM from the donor vehicle also....Especially if you use an Expedition/Navigator/Lightning....Other than that you should have no trouble doing a retro-fit of any 5.4 ..Good luck..

Thumbs up Engine Swap

I had mine swapped out at the dealer under warranty for the infamous Piston Slap issue.... I have a 99 4x w/ 5.4L Since mine was a 99 they put a 2000 engine in it. All 5.4l engines are Windsor's for starters and I am quite sure they are the same up to 03 except for the intake manifold. The 99 I have has an aluminum intake and the 00 and up have the composite plastic junk. So I was glad when the dealer swapped the intake and I kept mine.. I had a plastic one on my Stang and it cracked the new one sprang a leak from the coolant temp sensor and the dealer told me the only way to fix that was to replace the intake (now after the warranty). I wound up buying some high temp 2 part epoxy and sealing it onto the intake permanantly... sold the stang.. but after 50k more miles without a problem. Anyway if you want to keep the plastic intake you have to do a ground strap mod I think you have to get a longer grounding strap and attach it to the head vice the plastic non conducting intake. As far as the computer is concerned no change is necessary. The 5.4 l blocks are the same and bolt to the tranny the same One other thing I would watch out for is the cooling fan. I have a belt driven fan and somewhere along the line I think they went to an electric but that shouldn't affect the long block swap..
Oh and have fun with all those wires and hoses
Good Luck Man

The 99+ engines use the same ECM parameters. You can use any 5.4 from a 99+ F-150. On the Expeditions I am not sure but I believe that the PI heads came out in 2000, so check the heads carefully. As you have a 99 you also have the Pi heads so all you need is the donor engine. Everything will lineup and bolt on without problems. You need not worry about using the PCM from the donor truck. Go find a low milage PI 99+ 5.4 in a bone yard and slide it in.

5.4 Swap

Thanks all for the information! I will be doing this within the next two weeks. I'll keep notes on what I run into. I am almost thinking of just rebuilding the engine but I won't know that until I take it apart and see how much damage is present. Again, thanks!

My 99 Expy has P.I. heads. The entire engine runs, sounds, and looks like my buddy's 99 F150. We both have 5.4's
