besides alternator

Hey everyone, you've been a lot of help in the past, hoping for some more. Call me greedy...

About 8 months ago I replaced my alternator. It was showing all the signs. I replaced it was things were great.

Recently I've been showing the same symptoms. All power dips at idle. Battery light comes on under 2000 rpm. I can rev and it goes off, and dash lights get brighter. I started the engine, pulled the positive off the battery and it shut down.

I guess I need yet another alternator. What else might be contributing to this problem? What else should I do while I've got the alternator off? I don't think I have the time to get a bunch of tests or some repair on the unit, I'm hoping I can just pop another one on real quick. Is this common? Does $180, minus $30 for core seem like a lot of money for a rebuilt unit to you as well?

Is there anything that can save me soem money or time, or future aggrevation.

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,

See my post under electrical. I had a similar problem but lights would pulse. I repelaced alternator but found out that the issue was most likely a bad ground. The grounding strp form engien to cowl had corroded.

By the way. New 130 amp alternator at Murrays discount auto was $129.00 with $20.00 core dep. Check em out online.

But cahnces are you do not need another one.

Good luck

Jim

Which grounding strap do you mean? As far as I can see my 4.2 L V-6 has the main one from the battery to the engine block and a second smaller one from the intake manifold to the fire wall.

Have you had your battery tested properly?
