2005 Lariat Screw 5.4 Engine Oil
2005 Lariat Screw 5.4 Engine Oil
Hello,
I see there is a post a little futher down about engine oil and being that I'm up for my first oil change I figured I would ask all of you what oil do you recommend? It says synthetic blend as you all know but i was thinking of a full synthetic. Maybe Mobile 1 or something of that nature. I know also some people just say "eh oils, oil". But I dont believe so and would like recommendations from as many people as I can get. Thank you for your time.

I agonized over this decision for about a month before I did my first change. I finally decided to go with the recommended Motorcraft 5-20 and have no regrets. The oil stays clean and does not move on the stick. I have about 10,700 miles to date, and change at about 3500 miles. My main factor in my decision was in case warranty ever became an issue, I had followed their recommendation.

I have just puchased a 2005 supercrew lariat also, I have just under 1000 miles on it. I am also wondering which oil to use? I will stay with the 5w-20 for sure, but am just trying to decide between synthetic or synthetic blend. The other Question is should I change it at 1000 miles or wait until 3000 miles?
You can't go wrong with Mobil 1 in 5-30 or 10-30.
I've been using Mobil 1 for close to 300,000 miles in four vehicles, one of which was turbo charged. I use it in my boat (10-30 and 20-50) and lawnmower (5-30) engines too.
I have yet to have an engine leak or burn oil. I'll never use anything else.

10w-30, unless you live in IglooLick
Hi.
Closer tolerances usually means you need more protection - as a 10w-30 provides. While not the same engine - the principle still applies:
Also - Check out these links:

Notice the use of the word 'crappola', in conjunction with 5w-20 oils
I always run 10w-30 myself. Despite Ford, 5w-20 is not the best approach.
Cheers

Steve, I just had to drop you a note due to your screen name here - does that mean you are a 2003 Cobra owner, by chance? If so, congratulations! We're doing a lot of work with them, too, we're always tuned the Cobra's, Lightnings & blower Harleys.
As long as you don't treat the 03-04 Cobra like a race car every time you drive it, at the 550 RWHP level, they'll live for a good long time if they're treated right, even drag racing them a couple times a month. It's one of few engines we do not recommend using thicker oil on, as the piston-to sidewall clearance spec stock is tiny for a forged piston - about 1 thousandth. So you have to use the factory-recommended oil weight in a full synthetic & change it every 1500 miles, make sure they're fully warmed up before pounding on them, and no sustained top-speed runs or the pistons get hot and expand too much, seize, the top ring land takes a hike & breaks a ring, etc.
If you're a 03 Cobra owner you probably know all this anyway, I really just thought I'd say hello!

I use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5w-20 every 3000 miles....some people will say that is too often on synthetic, but nothing gives me more piece of mind than nice clean sythetic oil in my crankcase. Plus, my truck is Mike Troyer tuned with a few other mods and i run it pretty hard sometimes, overall the extra protection of the Mobil 1 is worth every cent.......
MGDFAN,
Awsome info, I had a 2001 ford s/c before purchasing my 2005 s/c. I was at the dealership for brakes at one point and remember the the service manager telling me that the oil changes are different in the 2004 + 2005 models? I cant remember if he said something about priming the oil filter? Does anybody know? I would like to continue changing my Own oil, but I dont want to hurt the motor either. Also when switching to full synthetic oil do you have to do anything special to the motor, I thought I remember That AMSOIL had some sort of engine flush. I have just under a 1000 miles on my new truck.

well, if you lease it i say the cheapest **** you can find every 8,000 or so....
if you own it change it now with full synthetic in a 5w20, 5w30 will work as well, they did change anything in any of the engines when they switched to 5w20, as far as the terd who told you 10w30 would give you more protection.....NOT unless you live in the desert.
