1988 150 problems

I have an 88 150. It has been sitting up for some months. I put a hot battery in it pumped the accelerator a few times and it cranked. Problem is it ran rough and has dual tanks. The rear tank says there is gas in it the front one to but it turns and turns and won't crank back up. I tried putting some fresh gas in it but the gas comes back out. Where do I start? If anyone has this problem or can help please post

Jaydee

Howdy and welcome.

I am sorry but I am a little unclear on your post. Where does the gas come out?

So, you have been trying to switch between tanks...right?

I have had the tank switch "hang" on me in the past. Do you have fuel reaching the carb/throttle body?

fuel filters been changed?

Do you have spark?

Pull a plug and look at it. They could be fouled.

Just a few thoughts.

Good luck.

Sounds like your fuel selector valve isnt working. Try replacing your fuel selector switch (the electric one) then go onto see if the valve is broken , its a common problem on these trucks. Let us know what you find.

Oh, Do you have pressure, press the nipple in your shrader valve, could be a bad pump in one of those tanks.

(Ha, nipple)

Question Questions 1988 150 5.0 EFI

This is what happened. I put a hot battery in the truck. and tried to crank it up. I put some gas in the tank and it would not take the gas. The gas ran back out. I truck turned over but ran rough. The truck then cut out and now it won't crank at all. The tank needles say that there is 1/4 tank of gas in the rear and the front reads empty. The truck ran fine when i parked it but noticed that when i tried to get some gas that it would not take any. So i parked the truck and figured i would go back and fix it later. Well later is now cause i have an 85 150 and it only has the front tank working now. That's another story.

OK, you have a 1988 F150 so you do not have an accelerator pump or a fuel selector valve and its fuel injected.
Turn your key to the run pos. with out starting, do you hear a fuel pump in the tank running? Try the other tank, is it running?
How about the High-Pressure pump is it running?
If no to all, try resetting your Inertia Switch and try again, its in the right kick panel.

Will think about the fuel gage sender later, it has nothing to do with running other than it shares the same switch enclosure with the fuel pump selector.

^^^Excellent advice.

I need a little clarification:

Do you mean the gas came back out the filler tube, as though the tank was completely full?

When you say it won't crank at all, do you mean it won't crank (as in you turn the key and nothing happens), or it cranks but won't fire?

jaydee, you have to explain out enough so we can understand what your saying instead of leaving your explanations hanging incomplete.
If gas is left long enough in a low tank it won't even light with a match. That's fact. I have seen it often in lawn mowers left over winter. When gas evaporates it can leave behind a varnish that blocks filters, valves etc.
You have to begin to eliminate all the possible reasons for what is happening.
Clear the tank and put fresh gas in.
Make sure you hear the pump running when you first turn on the ignition.
What do you mean for starting? No crank?,, crank but no fire? etc.
There is no easy way out but to clear all the faults and be rewarded with good operation in the end and knowing what was wrong and what you did to fix it.
