If the preformance you are looking for is consistant strength, complete reliability, and simple maintenance...... You got it.

I had an '87 150. 300, 4spd manual and sold it when I got marriedfor something newer and more "reliable".... still lookin'

A race horse they are not but a work horse they sure are. I have heard there is a guy around here somewhere that is really big into hot rodding them but that may be more than you are looking for. You've got what most guys would consider the toughest if not the best truck motor ford ever made. Take care of it and it will run forever.

Plus it is a speed density engine and wont take mods very well. I used to have one in a 96 shortbed 2wd. My brakes never worked but that engine could go forever. Used to work for a shipping company that had those in there vans. They would get 200,000-300,000 miles with little to no maintanence.

Well, I had an 83 F150 with 286K on it. Rebuilt the motor at 200K, because it had low oil pressure. nearly zero at idle, and maybe 20 when driving. It had been that way for about 25K. I bought a core motor from a boneyard to rebuild, while I drove the truck.

The performance parts I used were .060 over 9.5:1 pistons, an Wolverine cam( I think the lift was .474, and duration around 260?), and Offenhauser dual-plane manifold, Holley 390 SpreadBore 4BBl, MAC headers, and the rest of the exhaust from a 86 302. The motor was assembled by me. The head was remanufactured with new valves and springs.

The day I was going to do the swap, I floored the old motor, thinking it would finally blow. Well, it never did. For over 1/2 hour, it just screamed, and made noise. Finally, I just turned it off, and proceeded with the swap. When I took the old motor apart, the rod bearings were down to the steel shell, and egg shaped! The mains were well into the copper. Something to be said for the steel rods and crank.

After getting the new motor running, and sorting out the proper jets, I was very happy with this motor. It ran strong all the way to 5000 RPM, and the torque was amazing. I raced my brothers 350 Chevy Silverado, and waxed him. I had 3.73 LS, with BFG 33 X 12.5's on it. It was fun to drive, got great mileage, and I sold this 15 year old truck for $4500 in 98. I think it's still going strong!

Not sure if Offenhauser still makes the intake, or Mac makes the headers. I do know that Clifford Research still makes intakes and headers. The nice thing about the Clifford Intake is it's heated. On the Offy, I had to find and adapt a heated carb spacer. This is key in getting these engines to run right when they are cold.

As for not taking the mods well? I strongly disagree. I remember my old motor was out of breath around 3500 RPM. This new motor pulled hard all the way past 5000. Pulling my boat, I didn't have to shift nearly as often, as the low end torque was awesome. Going up a grade, it would pull lug untill it got down to 1500, and it would not go lower. It just kept on chugging.
