no offence to anyone on here but lightnings would be faster if they made a short stroke 5.4L the longer engine stroke makes the engine RPM slower to build. and also they weigh 500lbs more then my 4.6L ext cab pick up...

HI!... Mabey in stock trim but I know my 5.4 revs a ton faster than most other truck 4.6's. Ask JMC, even he was impressed how fast my old 5.4 revved to 6000rpm.

im comparing stock trim of course... why compare modded.... if the 4.6 will rev faster then the 5.4l will in stock trim then modded the 4.6 will always rev faster. which is my whole point to what im saying....

all things being equall the 5.4 is quicker than a 4.6, no further explanation needed use common sense .the 5.4 is not 500# heavier than a 4.6 that is rediculous. a 4.6 5-speed is lighter than a 5.4 auto but the auto is most of the weight not the motor.

my truck is a regular cab and it runs 16.6s bone stock. in the next few weeks i plan on a limited slip, headers, exhaust, and intake. i hope to be in the fifteens
this truck should go low low 16's or high 15's stock, if your truck has a good tune up, and 3.55 gears and a descent tire, work on your driving first.

a chip, electric fans, pulleys and a cat back exhaust, should get you 14's.

or look for a used supercharger in the $1500 range. if you have 3.08 rear gears a swap to 3.73 would help also.

at this point i would hold up on the headers, they are a good mod if you get the right ones, shorties are little help and the long tubes are $$$.

with gas prices being what they are i would start with electric fans and pulleys, then the cat back, all 3 would possibly help mpg and not require 93 octane. a switch to sythetic fluid in the trans might help also but i dont have one, in my 5.0 mustang it made the shifts silky smooth.

I believe Mike T told me the 5.4l is 300 or 400lbs heavier than the 4.6l engine. It was over a year ago I had that convo w/ him though.

The manual tranny doesn't lose as much power down the driveline as the auto either. So a 4.6l manual vs a 5.4l auto, the 4.6l will have less driveline loss and a lighter truck. 5.4l engine makes a lot more tq though. When I was comparing equal hp number built 4.6l and 5.4l engines the 5.4l would make over 100 ft-lbs more tq than the 4.6l engine.

i think the confusion is comparing a 4.6 5-speed to a 5.4 auto. the 5.4 is just a little bit taller block, they basically use the same pistons, heads.

the 4.6 5 speed vs a 5.4 auto is a good race, equally matched, the 4.6 auto vs. the 5.4 auto is a differnt story.

heres a nice little comparision including weight

theres really only about 40lbs different between the manual and automatic tranny's
a reg cab short bed auto weighs 3963lbs and a SVT lightning weighs 4670lbs... so there is a signifigant weight increase... between the two. the 97 model F150's weighd about 100lbs less due to difference in only a 3 door for the ext cab and less sound dampening in the cab and other random stuff...meaning my 97 ext cab short bed weighs about 4388lbs

the difference is 29 HP and 57 Tq is how much more the 5.4L puts down then the 4.6L

In stock trim... hence why I said "built" 4.6l and 5.4l engines.

Well to go 14's I would say my first mod on a stick truck would be something for traction. Put some 3.73's in it i would say, with a good limited slip or Posi. Then maybe some drag Radials. Then maybe some lift bars like they put on the L's. I've seen some mad launches on Mustangs, and that's what I would want to be able to duplicate as much as possible with the truck. I know it won't launch like a Mustang of course, but get out of the hole and the worry about the other...tune, headers, exhaust, efan, cai etc

No clue... My old 4.6l engine ran a 14.59 w/ mods. Never dyno'ed it.

My new truck only has 1000 miles on it. Just hit that tonight.

idk what you're trying to prove here though...
