5.4 5 speed
Last year dad was gonna trade up the 97 F150 with the 4.6L and M5OD (awsome 5.4L killer)...

How sure are you on that? My uncle has a 98 with the same set up and I consistantly kick his @$$. It all depends on what the 5.4 is running. Put a performance tuner on it and the 5.4 auto's can and will beat the 4.6 manuals easily. AND just as a added note I'm running a 4wd and his is a 2wd. So it's all in the setup.

i looked at a '98 f-150 4.6 5 speed, reg cab shortbed 4x4 thursday. ran and drove great, but its been rednecked a little bit, and i'm scared of it (111,000 miles) it had very good acceleration, compared to my truck which is the same except its a 4.2. someone had put loud pipes, big mudder tires,a chrome brush guard with lights, and changed the stereo. underneath it looked good, body looked good. asking $8500. if it had been original i would have traded. what do you guys think? is it worth that? i thought about offering $6000, but was afraid he would take it.
There could be 3 potential problem spots becasue of the tires.
The clutch/tranny. Big tires require more clutch work to get rolling. The stress on the input shaft from the extra torque required to move the tires.
The rear diff takes more of a beating because of the bigger tires.
The steering componants. Tierod ends, ball joints, idler arm ect...
Pop the hood and have a look at how the lights were wired. It will show you a bit about how this guy does things.
Any reciepts for repair work or maintenance?

chevy with the 4.3...5sp manual standard, no v8 with a standard trans...dodge 3.7 standard with 5sp mnaul...or 4.7 manual trans...ram 2500 you can get the 5.7 5 sp manual trans...ford..5sp manual is standard in the f-250...standard engine is the 5.4...Ford is creating two differint markets where one truck line used to cover booth...I would take a 5spmanual over a automatic any day....automatics cost more = more profit and not every consumer can handel a stick....the 4.2 with a 5sp is not enough to handel the fat and heavy f-150...a 5.4 5sp manual in a f-150...I would buy one now !!!!!
The M5OD won't handle the torque of the 5.4. They would need a ZF tranny. that is a heavier tranny so it would lower the CAFE ratings. There is not enough of us manual lovers to warrant the change. It looks line our next trucks will be SuperDuties. If I have to step up to a SuperDuty its going to be an oil burner.

The Zf tranny is bigger. Although the Tranny will bolt up to the engine you will need to use the clutch from a SD 5.4. That is if your crank has the 8 bolt pattern of the Windsor engines. If not you may be SOL. Judging from your model year you have the Romeo not the Windsor motor.
Besides that the transfer case from your F-150 will not bolt up. The tranny mount will have to be moved to the ZF location. The drive shafts will have to be lengthened or shortened. Because the tranny is taller you may have to cut the tranny tunnel or lift the body to make it fit. Not for the novice.

my 04 5.4 automatic is a dog ( transmission) Ford did improve the new automatic, but I want to pick my gears, when I want to...this truck hit's overdrive when I'm going up a hill to get to work, Trans dosen't know the hill's thier, just going by rpm, back off rpm, you don't get up the hill...if I had a 5sp manual, stay in 3rd and I would be happy, instead my auto goes to 2nd gear and use's more gas...in my truck it's verry easy to be in drive and kick up the rpm 250 to 500 in drive and not increas my speed....Ford...Dodge builds a v8 pick up with a 5spmanual.. only advantage with automatic is for towing ( reverse) clutch is not pusshing the whieght of the truck+ trailer...but...I want a five speed manual...

As was mentioned before, the excuse that I heard was that the Mazda trans/ clutch couldn't handle the power of the 5.4. Lame. I'd love to convert my truck to manual, but if I ever do so, it will be a T56 six speed, not a heavy duty 5 speed; but then again, I don't do any towing.
As a side note, the mention of 5 speed diesels warmed my heart; for six years I drove a '94 F350 dually regular cab with a 5 speed and a 7.3 Powerstroke, and that was the fastest diesel pickup I ever drove. That SOB could lay down 4 ten foot long tracks when you launched it right. I only made a few minor mods on it, and it would pull ANYTHING I put behind it without breaking a sweat. Damn I miss that truck.

The only demention it shares with the Mazda tranny is the bellhousing bolt patern. It is taller wider and longer. It could possibly rub in the transmission tunnel of the truck. You will need the flywheel and complete clutch from a Superduty. Your drive shaft yoke is too small. Gat a SD shaft and have it shortened.
