Where is the plug for a code reader?

Well my "check engine" light came on. Other cars I have owned you could get the code numbers with different inginition switch on/off turns. Am I going to have to buy a code reader?

If I do need a reader - where does it plug in?

Thanks
Forgot to say its a 1998 5.4V

If you are sitting in the driver's seat in a normal driving position, the plug will be just under the dash in front of your right knee.

...and you will need an OBD-II code reader.

Many auto parts stores will read your codes for free.

WRITE DOWN THE EXACT CODE NUMBER(S).

Perform a SEARCH on them here and then ask questions if you can't find the needed information in a precious post.

Good Luck.

Indeed.... On all OBD-II equipped vehicle, it'll be within 36" of the steering wheel. It's a federal standard.
