Motorcraft 5w20 blend and filter, 5000 miles, and tow at over 11000 lbs.
People on this forum go to far over-board on this stuff.
I do however, run Mercon V syn blend transmission fluid, two coolers and HD radiator in the areas that do need some extra help to increase their life.
This is on an 02 4.6 S-Crew. Does an impressive job pulling and you hardly can hear the engine idle except for the airflow noise of the fan as it engages and disengages.
Listen to Labnerd, he's telling it like it is.
Benifit from professional and free information.

Use any reputable brand with the latest API rating, use a reputable filter, change it regularly. Sleep well at night. Don't get so hung up on synthetic versus dino based, 3K, 5K, 10K, 15K, 30K, a million mile intervals, brand names, whatever. Just use good reputable products with the latest API rating and forget about it. I use Motorcraft bulk 5W20 or 5W30 semi-synthetic and Motorcraft filters, cause I get it for dirt cheap. All my stuff still runs. Works.

"Relatively" speaking of course...7 Quarts....8 quarts with a bypass... of motor oil and a filter are major items/investments for your truck, try running without it.

Please define reputable as it applies to motor oil and filters. I consider purolator, Fram "GARBAGE" you may consider it "reputable"...so where does that leave us I personaly don't get "Hung" up on filters and oil...I made my choice, use it, and I sleep well at night also.

If I can use a synthetic motor oil for 30K, change the full flow filter twice and the bypass filter once I'm all for it. If I don't need to waste my time draining the oil, disposing of it...I'm all for it. Saves me time, effort and natural resources as a bonus.

Is that a bad thing?

Money wise. $20-30 for oil and a filter isn't a big investment.

That's easy. For filters, Motorcraft FL820S. OE specified, good 'nuff for me. Oils, any brand that floats your boat and has the latest API ratings, be it the .99 cent a quart Discount Oil brand or Redline Synthetic.

To each their own. All I'm saying is that practically speaking, none of us are going to notice a difference between synthetic or conventional or this filter or that filter. All that matters is that it's serviced regularly. Stop thinking so hard about oil.

Changing Mobil 1 every 3,000 miles!!! Wow, if it makes you feel better, but that's definitely not necessary

My BMW uses Castrol full synthetic 5W-30 as factory fill. My car's normal oil change interval is 15,000 miles. In reality, my car's computer has me change it at 9,000 miles (probably due to my heavy stop and go driving). I had my most recent oil analyzed with 9,278 miles, and it still had a lot of life left, probably another 5,000 miles!!! Please note that this is a 1999 BMW 328I with 95,000 miles!

If you are using full synthetic and changing your oil at less than 7,500 miles, then you are definitely wasting your money and time. But if it makes you feel better, than it's worth it.

I run M1 synthetic but change every 3000 miles. I am sure its overkill, but I mainly change it because of the filter.

So for those who let there M1 go much more than 3000, what do you do with regards to a filter? Is there some special one that you have? Or do you just let that go without any change whatsoever until your next oil change?

What makes you think your oil filter only last 3,000 miles???

Why would Ford recommend 5,000 mile oil change intervals using Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft Oil Filter if it was only worth 3,000 miles?

Because its important to change filters as well since they filter the crap from your engine.

I dont really care what Ford states, my question was direct, was not looking for comments.

alot of people do go way over board. i have used mobile one ful syn havent had a problem. i also previously used castrol syn and didnt have a problem. i also used valvoline for many many years reg and durablend with out a problem, i would say just stick with what ever oil you want just change it regularly. im staying with mobile one beacause i change it out every 7500 miles. i personally dont like the thought of the 15k or over oils just beacuse thats like leaving water in a pool.. no matter how much chlorine ya put in it would u still want to swim? as far as oil filters... i started out with fram... their crap... moved to puralator ... crap.... (their crap because of the internal valves made of PAPER!!) i just went back to motorcraft because they are the best one i have found and if its good y change it?

Take it easy Jaguar; I was questioning your premise regarding filter life so I can help answer your question.

I guess your opinion is better than the actual manufacture? Again, what makes you think 3,000 miles is all your oil filter will last? Do you have any proof or do you just make it up in your head?

Change Synthetic Oil and filter every 7500 mi

I change my synthetic motor oil and oil filter in my vehicles every 7500 miles. I've been doing this for years, I never have an engine problem.

1997 Ford Explorer XLT, 5.0 V8, 4R70W, 139,000 miles, mixed highway and city driving, driven very hard, often at WOT to the redline, 5,000 RPM, frequently over 100 MPH on the Highway. I use M1 15w-50 & Purolator Pure One Oil Filter, every 7,500 miles. I never have an engine problem.

2000 Ford Explorer XLT, 5.0 V8, 4R70W, 102,000 miles, mixed highway and city driving, driven very hard, often at WOT to the redline, 5,000 RPM, frequently over 100 MPH on the Highway. I use M1 15w-50 & Purolator Pure One Oil Filter, every 7,500 miles. I never have an engine problem.

2002 Nissan Altima 2.5S 62,000 miles, mixed highway and city driving. I use M1 5w-30 & Purolator Pure One Oil Filter, every 7,500 miles. I never have an engine problem.

I really researched this one time and found an article that compared all the oil brands and how well they lasted. Then I found a forum where people ran a certain oil for a certain amount of miles, then submitted it for analysis and compared how each oil broke down. From the results, you can determine which brand breaks down sooner/later than the next. From that, you can deterime the intervals to change the oil.

Synthetics last much longer than dino oils, and are cleaner. However, The dino oils now will last longer than 3,000 miles without breaking down.

I pretty much settled on Mobil 1 synthetic, changing every 8-10,000 miles, using Purlator oil filters. STAY AWAY FROM FRAM OIL FILTERS. LOTS OF TESTS SHOWING REDUCED OIL FLOW AND PRESSURE using Fram.

If you really want more information about this than you would possibly want, check out this site. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/.

Also, keep your Air filter clean.

Using M1, I go about 7K then start looking for a convenient time to change it. I try to hit it at 7500, but sometimes it is more, sometimes a little less.

what you pay for

With oils and the number of cars oils i have changed at my place of work, in oil I have seen that you get what you pay for. The place I work uses p.o. and its decent but My buddies usually bring me up their cars and their own Mobil 1 synthetic and the difference in their oil and the regular customers is suprising. Id say go with Synthetic M1 and change every 5-6 thousand. You get what you pay for.
