Gas Milage
Gas Milage
I hope you can help me. I just purchased an F150 Super Crew 5.4 L about two weeks ago. And my gas milage sucks. I even went for a nice long drive on saturday (about 200 miles) and I don't think I will be getting over 15 miles to the gallon. Do I need to just drive it more? Is this common with new trucks?
Thanks

I'd give it a few more hundred miles before calculating fuel economy.
Supercrews are the heaviest configuration F150s you can get nowadays, so 15 mpg isn't too far out of reach, but I think it could be better. I can average 18-20 in my 2WD 5.4L Supercab.

My F-150 is super sensitive to driving habits. With jack-rabbit starts and high speed runs I can average 13 – 15 mpg. With easy starts and driving the speed limit I can get 16 ½ to 17 ½ day in and day out. On a 200 mile trip I can get 19 if I really watch it. Of course it is really tough to run 65 mph and watch everyone else blow by but if fuel economy is your thing – that’s what it takes.

Take it easy and your mileage will improve. I usually don't let the truck rev over 2500 rpm during normal driving. Obviously if I need to merg on the highway or tow, I'll kick it. Your mileage will be between 15-17 with normal driving. If your driving in the city with your A/C on full blast, don't bother calculating it.

Howdy. I get 12.9-15.5 mpg in my 01 4.6 4WD Screw in the city, 17 or so highway if I don't lay into it. My biggest problem is that I like having one pedal to the floor at all times.
Oh yeah, that's with 3:55 gears.

I'm only getting about 14.87 mpg with 67k miles. I fill my tank everytime all the way up to where I can see it so I know I'm putting the same amount of fuel in everytime. My normal driving route consist of about 12 miles highway @ 60mph and about 8 miles non-highway with only about 6 lights in my way. I even put an advanced tonneau cover on my (Hard cover weighs 35 pounds) truck and it only marginally improved it. Think I'm gonna have a tune up, computer update, and replace my fuel filter in a couple more weeks. I just don't get it I'm not even hitting the low end estimate of 16/21.

If you are using the same brand of gas each time I would give another brand a shot. Gas should all be the same but mileage seems to vary some by brand.

I normally get 17 on highway. In town will be 13 to 14. The best I ever got, now this was one time, was on last Memorial day. I drove a 200 mile trip, traffic was bad. I could not pass, take off fast or drive like i normally do. So I thought I would just drive as light as I could. I drove 213 miles, filled up when i got home, 10 gallons of gas. 21.3 mpg. I could not believe it!! But like I said, I do not remember ever driving that easy!! It does make a difference! These trucks are very sensitive to driving habits!!

You can see it in the filler neck? If you are "topping off" the pump to get here, note that some fuel is returning back into the station's tank via the vent return line. (At least, that's how they work on our crazy nozzles in CA). And I'm not sure about this, but some may be entering your vapor-recovery canister as well.
You can also consistently get the same amount of fuel into your tank by just stopping at the first click of the pump nozzle.
