Gas Milage
"You can also consistently get the same amount of fuel into your tank by just stopping at the first click of the pump nozzle."
Yeah, but the dollar amount is never a round number. Gotta round off to the next whole dollar.

I forgot to note that I'm very concious (sp?) of trying not to break 2000 RPM. I can usually stay under 2000 even crusing the interstate at 70. I talked to the mechanic that works on my vehicles and he seemed to think that the computer could need to be reprogrammed/fuel filter could need to be replaced/emissions cleaned. He works for Ford but does my truck on the side.
Just figured my MPG...I got 12...not to happy with that. It only has 500 miles on it though so I hope it will improve. It has the airaid intake on it as well. This was all city driving...Never getting above 2K rpm and no jack rabbit starts. Is this the avg. for such few miles and can I expect it to increase the more the engine gets broken in?
Thanks,
Brian

Gas Mileage 05 F150 4.6L
If you're gas mileage conscious, and want a F150, my suggestion would be to work a trade with your dealer for a 4.6L. I had my '01 F150 5.4L Lariat in for a fuel pump replacement Friday (see "Hard Start" thread). I needed a truck; therefore I rented a '05 F150 XLT 4.6L. I nearly passed out after computing the mileage Saturday: Better than 21 MPG ! To be conservative, I over-filled the tank beyong where I rented it Friday am, but made the calc with the full refill quantity of 6.1 gallons. The only error I can think of is an inaccurate speedo, immediate expansion in volume of very cold gas out of the ground take, or an over-filling pump. With the price of gas these days, I doubt the latter. My driving scenario was 1/3 city, 2/3 highway, and I ran the AC most of Friday since it was hot and humid here in MPLS that day. I do have a very light accelerator foot; that would bias results in favor of better mileage. This rental truck had 9600 miles on it, I assume that the engine is fully broken-in at that point. I talked to a Ford salesman (who is a friend) and he says that a 4.6L F150 will get over 20 MPG with light load and gradual acceleration. Driving over 70, quick acceleration, heavy loads and it will be back down in the mid to low teens.
Anyways, I am mileage sensitive, yet I still want a truck bigger than a Ranger. I have a 20' boat, my wife and I do a ton of gardening, I haul junk all of the time, and I like the ground clearance for MN winters. But, I don't think I need the 5.4L, and I believe my next move would be the 4.6L 4x4.
If you don't believe the results, get with your dealer and see if you can evaluate MPG over the weekend. I think a 5.4L is more desirable than a 4.6L anyways, you might be doing them a favor making the trade.

Just figured my MPG...apparently I average about 10.8...and I'm most definitely not to happy with that. I get about 325 miles per tank.
However, I am not what you would call a "mileage concious" driver.
I frequently drive up to 80mph and gun the engine. My daily commute to work is about 35 miles one way. Many tight corners and stops along the way.
On the other hand, when I'm on the highway, travelling long, straight, level distances, I get between 400 and 415 miles per tank.
Either way, as many have mentioned in the past, if you're looking for great...or even good...mileage, you need to be looking at a Geo Metro.

I have the SuperCrew, 3.55 gears, 5.4 and get 16.5 mixed driving, 18 on the highway. I have averaged almost 17 for cumlative over 3000 miles. I drive 75 on the highway and do not baby it nor do I jack rabbit. It is averaging about 1 MPG better than the lighter Silverado Ext Cab with the 5.3 that I traded in. So I am pleased with it.

fuel mileage
I get a kick out of folks that buy trucks then b***h about the fuel mileage. you have a 2 ton+ vehicle that isnt the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road, and they are going to eat fuel. my truck is a 90 f150 5.0l with 100k+ and I get 15mpg if im on the highway or city driving, doesnt make a diff. if you have a prob with the mileage, trade it in on a VW
What size tanks are on the 2004 5.4 3 valve. I have a reg. cab and it took about 22 gallons to fill it up on empty. I did about 200 highway miles and 80 city and im about on empty. I figure i'll probably get about 310-320 before it hits empty. That equals about 14mpg. No problem with me though; i love the 5.4, especially over my old 4.6.
I drove my 2003 Supercrew 4X4 , 5.4 325 miles yesterday, and got 16.7 mpg, that is driving 70+ mph, most of the time, and includes about 50 miles of in town driving. That is the best I have got, since I bought it,with 47,000 on it, it now has 52,000 miles on it. My Chevy Silverado got 18 to 20 mpg, on the same trip.
I'd love to get the fuel mileage some of you are complaining about! I average 12-13 in my 5.4 4x4. That is 100% in-town driving, and rarely seeing above 2000 RPM. I've gotten as good as 17.5 on the freeway at 70mph. Sure, I'd like it to be a bit better, but I knew that it would suck gas when I bought the truck. Those of you consistantly getting 14-15 are doing well.
2005 F-150 Supercrew tank size
tanks are 30 gallon on supercrew f-150. I usually get about 465 miles on a tank, with about 70% highway and the rest intown. I average about 17.5 mph per tank and keep it about 2k rpm. Now, I've added some extras to help the engine breath a little better... Airaid cold intake, airaid TBS, aeroturbine exhaust with resonator upstream. I've also switched to Amsoil 0-20w and have the additive in the rear differential. 3.55 limited slip. I've just put the new flash upgrade, see FordF-150.net for tb#, but it really made a difference in torque, and giddy-go. I've Hypertech III'd it for 87 octane and firmed the shift points. I'm very happy with the truck, good sound, kind of stealthy but when you put your foot in it, it roars.
