Engine swap 5.4 01 to a 04 3 valve
Is this possible? This would be a complete engine swap, would I need a new computer or tranny? Why am I asking, well I was first debating buying a lightning intake/supercharge takeoff and bolting it one. But then found that it's not that much more to just buy the whole engine out of a wrecked lightning, now I just came across a good deal on a 04 engine. Not really familiar with the 04 engines, am I able to throw a lightning super charger on them, if so, what years? I am looking to buildup the engine outside the vehicle then swap it. I should probably add, I have an 01 5.4 4X4 F150 Supercab, need it for the kids.
Any thing is possible. If you want to run the 3 valve and maintain the same engine controls you will need the engine harness and PCM. Now having said that the PCM is different. Your old PCm had the engine, tannny and cab harness all coming together into one connector. The New PCM uses three connectors. One for each control. You can see where I am going with this. You will need two more harnesses. It uses throttle by wire so you will need the 04 accelerator pedal too. As far as fitting it will bolt right up to your tranny as the bolt patterns are the same.

I can get a PCM for $250, the harnesses and pedal shouldn't be too much more. Do you know if the tranny is the same in the 04's? Also interested in if the new 3 valve design is worth the swap, is the standard 04 5.4 different than the new lightning engines? I know Roush makes a supercharger kit for the 2004-5, but I was wondering if 2005 lightning superchargers fit the new 3 valve engines or if they are different now. I have been searching, just didn't find the answer yet. Thank you for the information, it has been very helpful.
The trannie is different with the 5.4 3V than what is on your 01. If you look at the Ford site and build your own, with the 5.4 you get a high torque transmission. As far as model yours is I believe a 4R70W. The 04 is a 4R75W.
Not sure what the difference is, but may have to do with the higher torque of the 5.4 3V.

Ok, yes, I have the 4R70W, the 4R75W can handle more power/torque from what I understand. I don't think it's a big issue, but I may swap out the tranny at a later date as well. Thanks for the info.
