The popular engine misfire
I have a 1997 F-150 4.6L with the ever popular engine miss. I have had this misfire for quite some time. The first time was about 6 months ago. The engine would mis and constantly detonate because of a crossfire. New wires were an easy fix to this problem.. A month ago my problem came back. However the misfire is much more constant with only a crossfire here and there every 10 or 15 miles. The miss causes the truck to hesitate a lot. It is especially noticable during acceleration, up hill, and into the wind. At first I took it to a small town mechanic who told me it could be the cats. So...i got rid of them. Then I got on this site and foun d that coil packs may be the culprit. However yeserday i put on some Accel coils and this did not fix the problem. The wires I figured were fairly new, so I didnt take them into consideration and the plugs are about a year old. I did wonder what effect the detonation could have on the plugs. I plan to replace thm again soon. Does anyone else have some kind of a solution to this problem. if so please let me know.. Its bad enough, it hurts me to drive the truck.
have you cleaned out the top of the intake (maf, TB, EGR ports, EGR, DPFE sensor, IAC, checked vaccum lines, etc,etc,etc...) you can do all of it in about four hours, a couple of cans of deep creek, and sea foam. if you have not that would be the first thing to do. that way you and we know that they aint the culprits. there are multiple posts on this site on how to do it and what to do.
a word of warning be careful of the black hole under the intake it likes to eat spark plugs, bolts, sockets, etc.etc.
happy wrenching
