Windsor vs. Romeo
Windsor vs. Romeo
I was just wondering is there any difference at all between the Romeo and the Windsor 4.6 liter. I noticed that my friends with f-150s all have romeos and mine is a windsor. Seems kinda odd considering most of them came from the same dealership in the same year.
HI!... IMHO the WINDSOR built engines are better than the ROMEO's. Everytime I've heard of problems with a 4.6, I would say 75% were the ROMEO built one. The timing chain tensioner/guides are a bit different between the two, the ROMEO heads have a girdle on the cam mains. The bottom ends are slightly different as well. The ROMEO 4.6's are mostly passenger car engines. All WINDSOR 4.6/5.4's are truck engines. Be glad you got the WINDSOR.
Thanks for the help Neal and yeah im very happy with the Windsor man that truck is quick, never knew why it smoked the romeos till now. Still have a problem with one of the pulleys though. Other than that its great.
the windsor 5.4L engines were the one which had the plug spit out of the heads and the VCT problems in the new 5.4L 3V with the valves ticking... should i pull out the recals and such... and compare romeo's to windsors. all the SVT engines are romeo's not windsors.... and my truck has a romeo. alot of trucks have the romeo's.

HI!... FASTERF150 : Both the the ROMEO and WINDSOR used the same 4 threaded sparkplug holes in their heads from "98" to " 02". 99% of all 5.4's are built here in WINDSOR not ROMEO. That includes the 5.4 3 valve as well. All SVT "passenger car" 4.6's are BUILT in ROMEO. ALL SVT LIGHTNING 5.4's are built here in WINDSOR. Actually over 80% of F-150's get the WINDSOR built 4.6, not the ROMEO.
HI!... This site here will tell you the differences between the WINDSOR and ROMEO 4.6's. After you read it you will see why the WINDSOR 4.6 is a better choice. (for a truck at least).

One way to check is the VIN...

But if the sticker is still on the engine, you can look there too.

see even ford says that the romeo plant makes better engines... and every single high performance engine that ford makes comes out of the romeo plant not the windsor plant....might also be because its in romeo, michigan not windsor canada :-p

I believe that that article was meant to promote Ford's skunk works and the new line of vehicles Ford will be coming out with. It would be politcally incorrect for Ford to showcase a "foreign" plant.
Regardless, if you look at the basic differences between the Romeo and Windsor 4.6 you will see that the Windsor is inherantly a stronger engine. For example the Con rods are bigger or the dowels holding the mains in place.

Well here's a dumb question. Why would Ford build 2 different version of the same engine, and even have different blocks? i.e. Knock sensor beoing added to the Romeo's when the Windsors had them from day one? I can see using different connecting rods, pistons, and rings for different applications but damn!

windsors have always been mostly truck engines and the romeo's have always been for the performance and cars mostly so they never had nock sensors cause the head designs were better on the romeo's till lately when they started using the same head design as windsors they started to nock and so they added the nock sensors.
