sounds like you need a starter solenoid to me. but could also be a wiring fault. buy a chiltons or a haynes manual and they have a trouble shooting section. im sure that will be covered in there.

I would expect that. You said you can bypass the solenoid and it starts right up, so the starter isn't/wasn't the problem. You most likely have one of the following problems: [list=1][*] Starter relay/solenoid. This is the item that the positive battery cable hooks up to. Check for voltage at the signal wire while someone turns the key.[*] Clutch pedal switch. Bypass for testing, *BUT* put it in neutral, and chock the wheels.[*] Ignition switch mounted on the column. Could be defective electrically, or just loose.[*] Actuator rod from the lock & tumbler that goes down to the ignition switch.[*] Lock and tumbler (the thing you put the key into).[*] Wiring problem.

Pretty simple circuit on your truck. Clean battery cable connections at both ends of both cables just as a maintenence item. Bypass clutch switch and test. Check voltage at signal wire at the relay(In the start position). If you have 12V there, replace the relay. If no voltage, check for voltage coming out from the switch(In the start position). If 12V there, you have a wiring problem somewhere between the switch and the relay. If no voltage, check for incoming voltage TO the switch. If there, make sure the switch hasn't come loose and out of adjustment OR remove the switch from the column and cycle it manually with a small screwdriver. If it works that way, readjust it when you bolt it back up. If it doesn't, replace the igniton switch. Rarely will you have an actuator rod or lock and tumbler problem.

Post the results when you find the problem.

SL

just like snappy lips said, if you read my post, i said starter solenoid. read before you reply or buy parts.

Starter =$100 on mastercard
Solenoid =$20 on mastercard
Saving $100 because you took the time to read someones post before you went parts crazy = PRICELESS

there are somethings money cant buy, one of them, common sense
