Fan Clutch

I finally figured out what was making the horrible chattering sound, it wasnt a pulley it was the fan clutch, I feel like an idiot now for never thinking of it before. I still have one problem though how do you hold the water pump pulley still while you unscrew the fan clutch? Any help is phenominally appreciated. Im ready to get this over with. Thanks

There's a couple different ways.

The official way is to use a special spanner wrench that holds the water pump pulley by it's bolts while you use another wrench to loosen the fan clutch nut. Autozone and the like usually has these for rent.

The un-official way is to leave the serpentine belt on the truck and carefully, with a long rolling head prybar and a hammer, smack the flats of the fan clutch nut in a loosening direction to break the nut loose.

I just installed electric fans and to hold the fan clutch still I used a strap wrench. It slipped around the pulley and as I turned the handle rested up agains the water pump.

When I installed my eletric fans, I used a large pair of channel locks that I locked against the four pulley bolts then but a large crescent rench on the fan clutch and hit it with a hammer it came loose with no problem. lefty loosey righty tighty

Recently installed underdrive pulleys: install a tierod fork in your pneumatic hammer. Couple of light taps in the loosen direction to "dent" the nut, and BRRRRRRRRRRRRPPPP! Should be loose now.
