Double Fuel Tanks

When I fill up my tanks on my 1993 Flare side, I notice the fuel in tank #2 drops over a 100 miles or so of driving. Is it possible for the fuel in tank two to somehow end up in tank #1? I am not leaking fuel but the fuel level drops. I have verified this by adding more fuel to the #2 tank.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

What do you mean it drops?

More than likely the tank is shaped oddly and parts of it get used quicker, so the needle may drop faster at certain times.

thats the way my rear tank is, it doesnt get as much bang for the buck as the front tank. the needle on my front tank goes past the "F" mark. but not on the rear one.

Fuel Tanks

My 1993 Ford has two fuel tanks. I can fill both tanks up and run on the number one tank. Somehow the number two tank seems to loose fuel but there are no fuel leaks. Is it possible for the fuel to be transfered from the number 2 tank to the number 1 tank??

Thanks for your help.

I had a 94 f150 that would pump fuel from the rear tank in to the front tank. When I filled both tanks at once and ran on the fron tank first it would start bucking and chocking like the fuel pump was going out. so i would flip to read tank and noticed it had dropped just under full. I thought i had a leak but the truck run fine. run front tank and it would die. i puuled up to the gas pump t fill the rear tank and but accedent opend the front tank and man the gas came pouring out the neck. ok what the hell so i filled the rear tank and drove it anouther week or so and forgot about the front tank problem and switched to it and it ran fine. after about 2 months of playing with diffrent filling and tank habits i found out that as long as i Ran the rear tank first i could run both tanks but if i ran the front first the rear tank pump ran and over filled the front tank. took it to the shop they messed with it and couldnt find an awsewer. i finnally after both fuel pumps were replaced and it was still doing it i just stuck to the rear tank first theroy i ran like that for about 4 years then traded to my 2000. only think the mech could guess was there was a electrical gremlin in it that only seem to pop up when it wasnt sitting in his shop. hope this helps

Fuel Tanks

Hello,

Thanks for our resonse. This does help. Mine does the same thing you described, but my number 1 tank does not overflow. It is interesting you had the same problem. I sort of came to the same conclusion you did that when both tanks are full I should run off the 2nd tank first.

Thanks again for your help.

Mine has never "transferred" fuel from one tank to the other but I believe its very possible. Not long after I got mine the rear tank started leaking. I disconnected everything at the tank and dropped it out. My new tank hadn't come in yet so I got a gallon sized freezer bag and taped up around the filter, pump, pick up, etc. and the cable tied it to the frame as I figured I could drive off the front tank and wanted to keep all that stuff clean. When I tried to start the truck it cranked and cranked but would start. I started smelling gas real strong and got out to take a look. Gas was pouring from the taped up freezer bag and it was full. With no back tank the front tank pump would pump gas out the back tank line. Don't know if there is a check valve in the lines that failed due to a lack of pressure after the rear tank was removed or if there is some king of vent line between the tanks. All I know is that the gas the front tank pump was pumping was going out the line running to the back tank. If it can "transfer" with no tank it may be able to transfer with a tank if conditions are right (wrong??)

I had a 92' 3/4 ton with dual tanks. It did the same thing you are describng pretty much, although it only started cutting out and stuff once on me. I would run it on the front tank until it was about empty, then switch to the back and it would usually show around half a tank or so. Didn't really effect me, I just got used to running it that way. i think a few years back their was a recall on the switching unit of my truck, but since mine had a salvage title they wouldnt honor the recall, so I dont know I f that would have fixed it or not.
