'99 Flareside BIG CHANGE W@W

I haven't been around in a while but, I thought this would be a good time to drop back in and tell of a little project I just finished.

I have had my Silver 1999 Flareside Supercab 5.4 2WD since new. Because I am a racer, I tow a 24' trailer with my Winston Cup Car to various events. The truck was a perfect body, perfect interior all around great vehicle for the last 75,000 miles which were under warranty. The motor had a chip. I also had the K&N Filtercharger and Flowmaster Cat back exhaust. The truck had plenty of power but because I am a nut and the truck was no longer under warranty, I had a decision to make. If I buy I new one, I will be setting myself back financially for big bucks and most of all, I don't really love the new flat sided style. I think mine is nicer. So here goes...

I sell the motor right out of my truck. I buy one of the last 2003 Lightning SVT Crate motors and mate it up with a Jasper Monster Box tranny. I have it dynoed, tuned and install high flow cats and a true Bassani dual exhaust with an X Pipe.

Oh my gosh...

Well...we did a before and after chassis dyno.
Here are the results.
I posted the sheet in my gallery but do not know how to attach.

The origanal set up made 222hp and 282 ft/lb Torquei
The new set-up made 360hp and 454 ft/lb Torque

I am in love again

Very cool. How much time did you spend on it?

It took about 10 days to get it set up. Powersurge did the whole thing for me. I work on the more basic type race cars on a hobby basis. I know little to nothing about computer controlled modern hi performance stuff.

Lee,
Thanks for posting the dyno sheet.
I didn't drag it yet at the track but judging by the feel, I bet it will run low 12's. It's pretty nuts. With the Monster Box, all the guesswork of tranny mods are done. It shifts really hard when your on it. Enough to chirp the tires when it shift from 1st to 2nd at 5200 RPM's. I have not tried towing yet but, I would only assume it will be much better. I was told not to hammer it too hard with a load and just feed it.

I will take some photo's and load them in my profile and hope you will load them on the thread like the dyno sheet. I am not that literate with this site yet.

-Steve

Stock lightnings run anywhere in the 13s (the lowest I ever saw was 13.1 I think, and that was only one guy).

I would guess you would run somewhere in that range since yours is a little heavier, but with a few hundred $$$ in mods you can easily get into the 12's (although I dont know how compatible that would be for towing).

Check out the lightning forum:

PS: Post some pics!!!

It was a stock crate motor from SVT. We put a 2lb pulley to yield 10 lbs of boost, a high flow Bassani exhaust and a supertune by Powersurge performance. The numbers are great and the Truck is a stock looking sleeper monster. The only kinda giveaway is that, I changed all the badges on the truck to the SVT 150 that appears on the rear of the Lightning. I didn't and wouldn't use "Lightning" badges but SVT 150 is clearly what it now is.

Cost

Round Numbers
Motor 5200
Tranny 2600
Exhaust 1000
Misc. Lightning Parts 1000
Labor around 2000
Minus 1000 that I got for my old 75,000 mile motor.

I look at it this way. Yes, it was a lot of clams but, here is my opinion of what I have,

This is the truck the Ford should have made but, never did.
Great body style.
It has a back seat which, the Lightnings do not have.
Towing ability.
Fast as hell.
And most of all, it's all new underneath.
The motor has a 12 Month warranty and the tranny has a 3yr/75,0000 warranty. So, the cost is for a brand new '99 Truck.

I would have had to spend a lot more if I traded mine in on a '05 and I still wouldn't have what I now have.

....as well as, having two extra cool "suicide doors with shaved handles", and

most well proportioned cab/bed configuration, and

plenty of curves in the bed design, and

if yours was lowered, had a lightning front bumper and dark wedgewood blue paint......... it would look just like mine!

Thats my unbiased expert opinion!
