Oil Foaming

I recently noticed some oil foaming when adding oil. With 160K km this was a mild surprise. The engine doesn't use much oil, perhaps 1 litre in a cycle of 5000km or so. I am using 0W-30 oil because of the extremely low temps we get here. Could that have anything to do with it? Opinions please.

condensation is the likley culprit....if you dont go on long runs where the engine temp stays at 190 or so....it is a ugly thing to look at but no big deal.... the moisture that happens when it gets hot/cold during trips to the store and school back and fourth build up after awhile and cause what you are seeing...its no biggie...when spring/summer arrives you will see a big drop in this happy motoring...zap!

If you are talking about your filler neck, tha't common. What you are seeing is water mixed with oil. Your oil runs about 200*F and evaporates all the water out, but that filler neck does not get that hot, especially in winter, so moisture builds up on the filler cap. Good thing it's plastic.

Where is the oil foaming? On the dipstick? In the cap? in the neck?

I'll be glad when the weather warms up and the 'foaming' questions go away (until next winter).
