sounds like what probs i had on my 4.6--bad idle, horrible pinging, etc
Cleaned Throttle body, IAC (idle air control) unit, and EGR grooves, and it runs like new

Do a search for all these things and start reading...

Sea Foam IAC and MAF should be cleaned too. My 97 had 117K on it and did the same thing. A little cleaning and it was mucho better. My 01 w/ 72k started to shudder a little at idle and pinged at high RPMs. Sea Foam hooked it right up.

IF....it did it from the time you installed the chip, then the chip is applying to much ignition timing.
Try removing the chip as a test.

Could be a dirty fuel filter restricting flow. Insufficient fuel getting to the motor can contribute to pinging.

Use Seafoam in the fuel and intake system. Do a search and you will find lots of info.

Pinging

I did the seafoam, cleaned the IAC, and got into the throttle body as much as possible (opened the butterfly valve and used cutips to clean) without taking it off and it still pinged. I will try the EGR and maybe take the TB off when I get time. They didn't have the gaskets in stock at the parts store so I didn't go any farther.

I had the same problem with pinging but replaced the DPFE sensor (aka EGR Valve position sensor) and it seemed to do the trick. Advance sells them for $50.
