i6 and 302
The six has gobs of torque, but almost no horsepower. It is only two cubic inches short of the 302. It has a four inch bore and 3.97 inch stroke. The 302 has a four inch bore and a three inch stroke. Hence the difference in torque. You can get more speed from the small block, but you can have the same torque and better fuel mileage with the six.

I Actually got better gas mileage in my first truck a 69 F100 when I traded the 300 I6 for the 302...It didn't take it as long nor as much effort for it to get it up to speed.
both have pros and cons...
i have a straight 6 Fuel injected...its dont great for me and what i do..i do know that the specs for that are anyware from 140-145 hp and 265-270lb ft of tq. as you can tell is pretty beefy..for towing..and mileage..it does well..but if your looking for speed..dont look for it in the 6..but ..these things are known well to get up to the 300,000 mile club..these were built to last..soo personally the 300ci...is my choice...
