I've heard a lot of opinions over the years, but 98% of what you hear about Fram filters is just some parrot repeating rumors he heard or read somewhere. Almost all of the people bashing Fram have never used Fram.

About 15 years ago, I started thinking about all the Fram bashing rumors going around and decided to try something else. I had been using Frams for years without incident and had settled into a 5000 mile interval since that was about how long it took for the oil to start turning from brown to black. So I started buying different brand filters such as the Purolator Pure1, Deutch (carried at AutoZone), Motorcraft and a couple others. With each and every one, my oil turned from brown to black at about 3000 miles. Pure1 was the worst, my oil was completely black at 2000 miles. So I went back to using the 'bad' Fram filter (PH8A) and all of a sudden my oil was clean again, still brown till about 5000 miles.

Now maybe I'm oversimplifying things a little, but to the best of my understanding the purpose of an oil filter is to filter the oil and strain out the impurities. If my oil goes from brown to black, that is an indication to me that it is no longer clean and perhaps the filter isn't doing it's job. I don't give a rat's behind if the filter is made out of cardboard or used condoms just as long as it keeps my oil clean. Every time I've tried a filter made by Purolator (the most popular brand other than Fram), my oil gets dirty way too quickly. So I use the filter that works for me. You can bash Fram all you want, but all I hear is you repeating rumors that you heard.

Going on 25 years using Fram filters and I've never had an oil related failure. My '88 F150 was still running strong and not burning oil at 200K miles when I traded it on my 94 Ranger. That truck now has over 140K and doesn't burn 6 oz. of oil between 5K oil changes. I just bought my 02 Lariat and have only changed the oil once on it, used a NAPA filter to try it out. If I don't like what I see, I'm going to buy Fram again.

oil filters

when i see that orange on any engine, the first thing that enters my mind, is "Unprofessional" I had mulitable failures using that orange fiter, from no oil pressure just after installing it, and 2 times where that filter leaked from the seam. never never never buy that cheap junk again.

To All

I have a 1988 GMC K1500, I purchased new. Now has 297,000 miles. Engine has never been apart. Not even the Valve covers off. Most dependable truck I have ever owned.

The only Filter it has had on it is Fram.
I guess that just shows how "UNPROFESSIONAL " I am.

Oil and filter on that truck has been changer religiously every 3000 miles.

The 2002 F150 I just purchased has some BIG shoes to fill. We'll see. So far I am pleased, but I,m a little afraid to get on her hard from fear of sending a spark plug through the hood!!!

Frams used to be very good filters a long time ago that is why everyone on here that says they are good say "I've been using them for 20 years". well fram was sold to a huge company and like most quality products sold to big corps the quality is diminished due to the all mighty dollar.

Frams are also prolly fine on any vehicle where the filter is verticle or close to verticle. our truck have a horizontal set up which requires a extremely good anti-drainback set up in the filter. the current fram has a lousy rubber and cardboard anti-drainback set up.

if you notice in all of the fram bashing posts no one questions the filtering ability of fram just the problem with the anti-drainback set up

your oil turning black has nothing to do with your filter. two things cause it; valve/ring blow-by and heat.

Wink Orange Filters

Ford specifies a filter (for 4.0L, 4.6L, 5.4L) that has a silicone antidrainback valve. Motorcraft 820-S meets that. The Fram that meets it is the Toughguard TG-2 which costs about two dollars more than the Fram Extrguard. The equivalent Purolator is the Pure One, not the standard lower cost Purolator.

With two engines under warranty, usinjg Synthetic and changing at 4500-5000 miles to satisfy the warranty, it is a good idea to pay just two bucks more for the filter. I may also try Delco and Bosch - if they have the silicone valve and if I can find them in this non-competitive retail market where I live.

Would appreciate hearing of any additional studies of filters beyond what has been linked in other posts here.

VaGuy, I am not sure if you have heard this, but my understanding is the the Motorcraft filters are Pure Ones with the Motorcraft branding.
