startup tapping

Hi, all. This is a great site. I just joined largely because I just bought my 1st F150. Always been a Mopar man, always respected Fords. Now I got one, and I LIKE it. (1995 longbed code N 302). I read kievitk's thread about the tapping noise. I think that may be what mine's doing. Lots of tapping only after sitting for hours (overnight). I thought it was tappets bleeding down. Only takes a few seconds to settle down. Am I describing PS the way I think I am? I've got 113k on her now. Sounds like I don't need to sweat this Right? Thanks for any input.

Thanks! That article tells me I probably don't have a PS problem. (wrong motor, too old). Sounds more likely I've got oil drainback. Just had the oil changed this afternoon. Guess I'll know in the morning, huh?

What oil filter are you using? Some have had problems with Frams and having exactly your problem.

Yeah, ya know for sixteen years, if it wasn't orange, it wasn't on my engine. Then I went to aircraft mechanic school. When you change the oil in an aircraft piston engine with a can type filter a required inspection is to cut open and inspect the filter, which we did in class. NEVER ANOTHER FRAM- EVER. The one they put on today is house branded Wix. I've seen the inside of a Wix, too. First rate. I sort of question the drainback theory on this engine because the oil filter is positioned thread end slightly up. I wonder if perhaps I just have some trash in the check valves in some of the lifters.

I agree with Mr kingfish51 that popular orange brand oil filter ruined ur engine, it happened to me, happened to other people I know, like I tell people ur better off leaving on the orginial oil filter on, than installing that popular orange brand oil filter. The best oil filters are NAPA Gold, Wix, Hastings, Purolator Pure 1, Mobil 1, AC Delco, and Amsoil Filters.

Seemed to be a lot better today with that house-branded Wix filter on it. I don't know about ruining the engine. Aside from that annoying misfire frrom a wire I can hear arcing, that little 302's running great. Now if I can get the temp and speed sensors replaced. Told my wife I was going to name the old girl Enterprise 'cause she keeps suffering from "internal sensor malfunctions". lol

NO NO NO I didnt SAY that a new filter will stop ur tapping noise. I SAID; THE DAMAGE HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE BY USING A CHEAP ORANGE BRAND OIL FILTER. SOOOOOO if you get a new engine, you can ADVOID that happening again, by NOT USING THAT POPULAR ORANGE BRAND FILTER . Like I said before when im in Wal Mart and I see a guy picking up a orange oil filter from the shelf, I have to control myself, walk away, cause I have this urge to grab that guy by the neck and shake and slap him and tell him how stupid he is buying that filter.

K&N's rock...

.. great filter.

... actually, EXCELLENT filter. Extremely robust and top-notch internals. Cut one open and see for yourself.

.... my first choice after Amsoil's ( which I can't seem to find with any consistency around here )....

Mobil 1 is my 3rd choice... Motorcraft my 4th and last.

Gotta love the fact you can safety-wire the K&N unit ;-))

cheers

Okay, if you cut open a filter like a Purolator or Wix you'll find pleated paper surrounding a perorated steel core. The pleated paper has a steel cap at either end, as I recall welded to the steel core tube. Some have a check valve to prevent oil drainback. If you cut open a Fr- er brandx filter you'll find damn near everything inside it, including the caps is paper, and the pleats aren't even as dense. Pure junk. You could kill a 300 with one of those things, and we all know what a feat that can be.

As for my truck being ruined by brandx filters, I don't have any hard evidence it ever had one on it. The only previous owner seemed to like dealership service, and I'm darn sure never gonna put one on it.

The noise is still there, still only on startup, still gone COMPLETELY in under 5 seconds, and doesn't seem as bad since the oil change. I think the guys at Fleet put in whatever weight ford called for. (Exxon) And a Wix filter!!!

I changed the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. (she was misfiring really bad) Man what a difference. I'd say it purrs like the proverbial kitten, but it's smoother and quieter than that.
