Marbles in the engine

I have a major ping when foot is into the throttle or pulling a steep hill. has K&N intake, new plugs and wires, changed pcv valve and fuel filter, ran some sea foam thru the system and a couple tanks of high octane gas with fuel antifreeze. still bad ping.

any suggestions welcome.......

maybe its the plugs??? brand new bosch platium plugs.

Definately have some detonation, but I can't see what would be causing it. Plugs? I don't see how they could be. And you have good fuel in there so unless the computer is not adjusting the timing, I don't have a clue. Good luck and please let us know what you find...
I lived in Clackamas and Oregon City some years back, where are you in Oregon?

Shot in the dark,,,, 4.6L and the beginnings of clogged EGR ports, pre code throwing. Search on P0401 and you will find threads on pinging and how to clean.

I had a problem with ping; #1 plug was slightly deformed when I changed them 6k ago. I have been running 89 octane, not 87 as I did before, and I also add 7 oz of acetone to every other full tank of fuel. I've not had the problem since.

I did switch fuels, Citgo, Chevron, and BP 87 octanes but there was no change and the ping did remain. With 89 from any one of the three, there is no ping.

I recommend you do a search concerning Bosch plugs; some like them, some don't and you can make up your own mind on that brand.

Good luck,
Curt

I'm siding with 864.

I'll add the DPFE sensor and/or the EGR valve.

And, the consensus is to use ONLY Motorcraft Platinums.

DO THIS:

Search the "Engines" forum for "Rough Idle Problem", youll find a thread under my name. Read thru it, lots of good info and pictures. i had the same problem as you had. Lots of good info in there. I had 73,xxx and i thought my truck ran pretty good until i did this.....when i cleaned my IAC/EGR,etc, my truck ran like brand new!

The dealer wanted around 400 bucks to do this. I bought 10 bucks worth of gaskets and 4 bottles of throttle body cleaner and did it myself in 8 hours. If I did it again, it would take me about 2.

Good luck, keep us posted

Read your post (the 3-pager) on Rough Idle Problem. Nice work and excellent description. I think that will be my next weekend project.

Sorry for the dumb question, but I can't find that page you are talking about, I have a 98' F150 with the same problem. Did the seafoam thing too, didn't help. I can't justify running Super Unleaded all the time.

I had the same problem with my 4.6 a few years back. I would guess the pre-detonation "ping" is from the carbon build up in the EGR , trottle body and manifold. I bought a Haynes manual (I highly recommend this to you) for step by step instructions on how to disassemble your air intake system and other appliciations. I used carb cleaner, a wire brush to clean the carbon out. I know there is numerous posts on this website about this. The EGR is located on the drivers side to the right of the TB and looks like a spaceship from Star Trek. Very inconspicious. Getting to the EGR valve is time consuming but not very difficult. (You need to disassemble the air intake system).

I hope this helps.
