Question hesitation

my 00 lariat is extremely hisitant when first started. I even wait about a minute and half to put it into gear after starting to give the oil time to reach the lifters and circulate through the engine.

My truck has just hit 103K, all new spark plugs. I blew out a POS bosch only to find out that they don't work so well in ford vehicles. So there is a helicoil in my truck, but it's done this for atleast the last year.

any suggestions? i run a K&N FIPK with magna flow exhaust but i doubt that has anything to do with it.

If the plug wires are OEM, they could use changing out; use dielectric grease when you install them on the plugs and coils.

The 2000's don't have plug wires, they are coil-on-plug. I would clean the filter element itself and the maf also.

I know the COP's need replaced. I blew a SP a few months back and they helicoiled it. i didn't have the $3k for them to replaced the heads.

At ford they're $100/ea. can you get them anywhere cheaper?

Troy,

The coils either work or they don't. Any deterioration would be trivial. You say you used Bosch plugs. The consensus is to use only Motorcraft platinums.

The fuel filter can cause all sorts of problems. Most folks recommend they be changed out at the 15-20,000 mile interval.

Also, you might want to check your EGR valve. It may be sticking when cold. I occasionally DC the supply hose at the firewall and shoot some FI cleaner into the valve and let it sit overnight.

Check for vacuum leaks. With your odo reading, there is a good chance a hose has cracked.

You might want to lube the throttle linkage with some white lithium grease.

Lastly, treat the fuel system with SeaFoam.

No disrespect, but I have to disagree. Many problems caused by these coils without total failure. But mostly causes missing under load.

i disagree with that as well. Degradation in the coils can lead to water dripping down onto the sparkplug rotting out the COP rubber boot. This happens to the rear COPs more often the front three on either side. Conductivity can be diminished over time as well.

OK. I accept that coils do degrade. My point was that on a 2000 model with 100K miles, the 5.4 has several points of failure that are much higher probabilities than failing coils.

Troy, AFA degradation, I was referring only to the electrical side. Degradation and compromise of the body/seal/connector is indeed a real possibility. The very first in the plethora of problems I've had with my truck was coolant leaking onto a coil, causing it to fail. My symptom was not yours, however. It was the classic misfire symptoms.

I wish you luck with the resolution of your problem!

Steve

I will take your's and 01screw's suggestions and try them one by one to see what the problem was. thanks for all the help guys... now to find the time...
