high idle?

hey everyone i just cleared my computer in my truck took neg battery cable off and turned on headlights. have driven it for 2 days with codes cleared and now my truck idles high in park. around 1000 rpms when i put it in gear with the break on it drops to normal range. is this supposed to happen or whats the problem? i did have the p0460 and p0125 codes... any help on those would be great!

Posted today elsewhere:

P0460 – Fuel Level Input Circuit
P0461 – Fuel Level Input Circuit Noisy
P0462 – Fuel Level Input Circuit Low
P0463 – Fuel Level Input Circuit High

Here are the pertinent codes. Which one did you get?

The P0460 is also set if the drop in the tank level doesn't correspond to the amount used (by adding up the injector pulse widths over time).

Did you drive offroad, cut doughnuts in the snow, or go parking in the truck with the key on? If the latter, try dating skinny chicks!

P0125 is insufficient temperature to enter closed loop. The temperature listed is 175 degrees after 300 to 800 seconds of driving (5 to 7 1/3 minutes). Reasons that come to mind include thermostat stuck open, low coolant level, air lock in engine, cylinder head/gasket creating exhaust in coolant, coolant frozen in radiator or engine or failed ECT.

i am not sure but my trucks idles at 700 RMP in parking, and 600RMP when in gear holding the break, after few minutes of working time.

neso, I don't drive an automatic but I doubt that's how it's supposed to work. I would have expected the idle speed to be the same or even a little higher in gear. If you shift between drive and neutral and back every 5 seconds or so does the engine speed increase in neutral and decrease in gear every time?

What does the idle speed do if you turn on and off the air conditioning every 5 seconds or so?

My '01 5.4 does the same thing as neso's...700 in neutral/park, 600 in gear. I assumed that was normal, but if it isn't, let me know!

well jsut to let you know now my idel jumps around ..it will go down to about 700 then back up to 1k then down and up when just sitting in park. im going to take the TB and upperintake elbow off and clean that along with my iac. ill let you guys know if it helps any. I have no idea what to do about the p0125 since my fluid level is normal and my temp gauge doesnt go any higher then normal

That code 125 would be suspect for a high idle condition if the PCM thinks the engine is still cold.

Idle speed problems are invariably the IAC or the TPS.

Racerman, what bluegrass was suggesting wasn't that the thermostat wasn't working. He was suggesting that the engine computer doesn't think that the truck has warmed up because of a bad Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) or Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT). Whichever one of these your truck has, it is independent of the temperature sending unit that drives your dash temperature gauge.

If the PCM thinks the engine is stone cold, it could be raising the idle. For instance, if the connector on the ECT was loose or the wire was done to one or two strands, it would intermittently think it iwas cold.
