V8 Mileage
V8 Mileage
With all conditions being equal, how do the mileages of the V8s do compared to eachother. The 4.6 vs the 5.4. I am looking to get a F-150, but I need to know how their mileages compare. What do you guys typically get. Thanks for the help.
I'd say with the 5.4 the average is around 14-15 MPG (I usually get 13-14 on the highway, 11-12 in the city).
With the 4.6 from what I have seen mileage is typically a few MPG higher.
Both engines can get crappy mileage, and both can get very good mileage. It really depends on how you will be driving, your area, and it really can come down to the truck. Some trucks just get good mileage.

I bought a used (137k) '99 extended cab, 2 whl drive, auto, 4.6l, 3.55 gears, std. 255/70/16 tires/wheels. It was well cared for inside and out. I get 15-17 city, 21-24 highway. I'm 5 miles from work, maybe a 10 minute ride; on the hwy, I usually drive 65.
Good luck with your research.

i have both a '04 5.4 scab and a '04 4.6 reg cab. No particularreason, just ended up that way. If i had it to do over i would get two 5.4's. The gas mileage difference is negligible, horesepower no comparison 5.4 all the way, additionally resale will mostassuredly be better on the 5.4 versus the 4.6. i get about 14 - 15 on both trucks running to work. Thats with the cruise set at 85 usually.
I owned a 98 with the 4.6 and now the new 3v 5.4. Both trucks were 4 wheel drive. The 4.6 was a regular cab and the 5.4 is a scab. My best and worst gas mileage out of both trucks are the same. In the summer, I average 17 out of both trucks. In the winter, right around 13. I will note the 5.4 doesn't have to rev near as high as the 4.6 to get the same amount of performance, hence the reason the two motors are basically the same for mpg. While towing I had to rev the 4.6 better then 3500 to get any performance out of it, with the new 5.4, I don't even break 3 grand. The 5.4 is a better choice regardless if you tow or not.

97 F-150 reg cab, long bed 4.6L 2WD 3.08:1 rear, I averaged 16mpg in the city 18-20 on the road @ 65 or so.
01 Screw 4.6 4WD 3.55:1 gears and I average ~14mpg in the city and 17 or so on the road. Although I do drive like an *** so that affects my mpg a little.

My wife has a 99 expy-4.6 loaded down travel stuff got 21. (the best I've ever gotten)
I just got 2001 S-Crew with 5.4 (4X4) loaded with travel stuff got 16.
Both of these were highway.

My 04 Screw 4x4 5.4 is loaded, also have an ARE cap on the back which adds some wieght. I get 14-15 mpg, but I drive it like a sports car. Regularly drive 80mph on the highway, so I can't complain about the mpg's. But then again, if I wanted great mileage I'd by a Honda - But what fun is that.
My stock 4.6L 97 F-150 2X2 mileage varies quite a bit depending on driving style and type of tires. I can pretty much depend on 16 city and 22 highway. I can add about 2 mpg with fair weather street/highway tires, but I prefer a little more traction in wet weather.
It would be nice to know how you all are getting such good mileage. I have a 00' Expy 4.6, 3.55, 4x4 and get 9-13 in town or on the hwy. Best I ever got was 14.25 towing a car through the mountains.... and I still dont know why. Doesnt seem to matter if I have my foot in it or not. Running Shell gasoline most of the time...
My father has a 2002 SCREW and he reports the same mileage with a 4.6, 3.55 and 4x4.

My 01 KR with a 4.6, 2WD, Cat. back dual exhaust and hard cover on the bed got 14-15. Maybe alittle better on a long extended cruise on the highway.
New 05 KR with 5.4, 2WD, Cat. back dual exhaust and hard cover on bed gets 14-15. I've never driven any length on the highway with it yet.
The difference in HP between the 4.6 and the 5.4 three valve is night and day. The 5.4 is the way to go, and with the same mpg....why not.
