According to a lot of threads on this issue, it is best to use the oil recommended by your owners guide. Tbird hit the nail on the head. If your vehicle is still under warranty, you might want to consider using the specified oil. You just don't want to take the chance of some kind of engine failure occurring, and then your dealership refusing warranty service because they determined that you did not use the specified oil. I, for instance, use Motorcraft 5W-20 as per my owner's guide. There are other brands of oil out there that have an "equivalent" viscocity, but you need to be sure that the other brand meets the Ford spec in your owners guide. DON'T take chances.

My 2 cents.

I use Mobil 1 10w30 in my 97 4.6, it's been going strong for over 150,000 miles...
The reason why is because I think that Mobil 1 is probably the best oil that you can pick up at most retail stores.
