racing vs. silverado
Hello everyone,
Well as most of you know i have just purchased my F150. My friend wants to race me on a 2 miles. I have a 5.4L V8 Trition with a 3.55 axles and he has a 5.3L V8 Vortec Chevys Engine. Both trucks are 2001s. Mine has a lot less miles. What are my chances of beating him i have never raced with my F150. I would apreciate some help from you guys before racing him. - Thanks again

If he has a chip or programer with the top speed removed and you dont you won't have a chance If neither of you have a chipor tuner you will be close to a tie as both will top out at close to 98 mph.Get a tuner first and smoke the sucker!!!!!!!!!
HI!... Sorry to say this bud, but you will lose. In a 1/4 mile race you will pull him out of the hole and probably stay ahead of him till about the 1/8 mile. Then he will gain on you and pass you. I say he will win by about a truck to a truck and a half. Your 5.4 only makes 260H.P and his 5.3 makes 285H.P. He WILL pull you on the top end in a 1/4 mile race. You have more TQ than him 335FT/LBS VS. your 350FT/LBS, so you will come out of the hole faster if you can get traction. Stock to stock with the trucks being equal the FORD is faster in the 1/8, the CHEVY is faster in the 1/4. Now stay away from the 2 mile race he wants to do, someone could get hurt and there's no point since your top speed limiter will shut you down around 98MPH. Just race 1/4 mile.
I agree with Neal, my money is on the Chevy.
I drove a 4.8L (I think?) 4x4 '01 or '02 chevy at work and Im pretty sure that thing would take my truck. Of course the work truck I drove was a regular cab long bed with 4x4, with no options (i dont think it even had a tape player in it), so it his is a crew cab fully loaded, it may be a little slower.

After owning a 5.3 for a while and seeing what it will do, in the quarter I would say that you don't stand much of a chance. At 2 miles I would say you are still in trouble. The longer distance will help you but the 5.3's are reasonably quick out of the hole and they keep on building throughout the RPM range. The fords seem to be quick out of the hole but dye off real bad in second gear. I really miss that truck.
The ford is a lot more comfortable than the GMC was but boy... if you just wanted raw power and towing ability you couldn't beat it. I pulled an IH scout traveler on a car trailer up Mont Eagle mountain on I-24 comming out of Chatanooga TN at 60 mph without even breaking a sweat. Thats 7000#+(trailer and truck) on about a 5-6% grade for about 8 miles if memory serves. I would even attempt that with this ford but the trip would be a lot more comfortable.

my chip i beleive set the speed limiter to 130. but no clue how fast i'm going i'm just calculating from RPM cause speedo only reads 100mph
Try and get a GPS or borrow one from somebody. That's how i did mine. BTW I hit about 4650RPM in O/D.
5,000 RPM is right around 120mph in 4th for me. i've got stock 3.55s. then in OD it wont let me push past 3500 in 5th. even down hill. and the place i had chip programmed at said the speed limiter was moved to 130mph. but ehh... i dont think i will need to go any faster then that... i think tires fly appart around 165. and truck sets a bit high.
I agree with Neal, either borrow someone's Or get your own, Because thost 327's got some serious power up high. Light to light, You'd take him, but 1/4 Mile, No way. Your 330 Is a good low end torque motor. If you really want a shot, Put in the best gas you can (Sunoco 94) AND two bottles of octane boost. That should put you about 100 octane, Making a bit of a differnece. Good luck!
