Can anyone tell me what coil packs are, where they are located, what thry do, and how to check them. Thanks in advance.

2000 and newer 4.6 or 1997 or newer 5.4's I believe.

Separate coils located above each spark plug - eliminates spark plug wiring, but run hot and heat soak eventually fries them. Expect to change at least one during your ownership experience.

Older 4.6's and all 4.2's - fewer but larger units feeding several plugs each, with spark plug wires; not mounted above the plugs. Not as much of a PITA to deal with ;-)), but not "stinkin' neat technology" either...
