Which cams are better?

I posted this in the Lightning forums also but...

I recently picked up a good set of 2001 5.4L heads. I am having them rebuilt for a 4.6 Forged Long Block I am building with a conversion to PI heads.
Here is my question;
I already have a good set of 1999 Lightning cams. I assume they are PI cams, are they? Also, which cams are better to use in a mildly blown motor, the 2001 cams or the 1999 Lightning cams? Is there an advantage to using the L cams or are they essentially the same?
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

WLF

WLF-based on everything I've read, PI cams are PI cams, it doesn't matter if they were in a 4.6 GT or a 5.4 Lightning.

Ted'98,
Thanks. I am also doing a PI headswap. Where did you find the intake?

WLF - I got one on eBay and another one when I bought a set of heads that I wound up not using.

It is easy to find the non-PI intakes on eBay, but much more difficult to find the PI's.

WLF - I thought of one other thing. At least with the 4.6 intakes, there is really no difference in the design of the PI and non-PI intakes except the shape of the ports where they bolt to the heads.

If you can get a non-PI intake, you could port it to match the square shape PI intake. Just a thought in case you can't find a reasonably priced PI intake.

Thanks Ted'98,
I can find plenty of Mustang intakes but no truck PI intakes. I think the PI intakes are suppose to flow better so I don't want to try to port match a Non-PI intake. I have actually considered a Bullit intake off a Mustang but they have become Premium pieces with a Premium price to go with it. If I have to I will go with a Mustang intake. My motor is set up so the increased flow in the upper RPM range will actually help.
I will keep mentioning the need in posts with the hope that someone with one laying around from a project or after a roots style supercharger install will contact me... See another shameless plug...

The PI intakes for the mustangs definitely outflow the non-PIs, but I couldn't tell any difference between the overall design of the truck intakes.

These pictures would give you some idea of how similar or almost identical the two are:

Truck PI vs. Non-PI intakes

Nice pictures, did you just happen to have those pictures or do you have a PI manifold that you....er....might want to sell?

I have an extra PI truck intake, but I've got plans on opening it up to try to take adavantage of the better flowing heads.
