My 98 F150 4.6 sounds like a tugboat!!

Anyone else have this problem? Its starts to make kind of a low octave whistling noise that sounds like a tugboat horn (not as loud obviously) but loud enough you can hear it inside and outside the truck pretty darn loud, I cant pinpoint where its coming from and it happens for no apparent reason then stops then does it again, I never her it at highway speeds, could it be a fan? The truck runs and drives great, has 103000 miles on her, its the 98 NASCAR edition in my sig.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Mine does it but only for a short time until the viscous fluid in the fan gets circulated, usually 1 block of the neighborhood or less. I don't know where else the noise could come from on the truck, vacuum leak perhaps? Low octave, hmmm...can any else help?

Regards,
Curt

Thanks and that could make sense if it were something having to do with the fan but mine does it more frequent and extremely annoying. Our fans have fluid that gets circulated??! Man I feel stupid, ive never heard of this, could it be the fluid level has dropped?
Anyone else have this problem?
Could it even be the steering pump?

To the top...

People utilize this method to get the thread back up and on top so that it'll receive some attention and, hopefully, the poster will receive some feedback to his/her original question.

Try searching about "Foghorn" and you'll come up with a few responses.

Do you have an aftermarket FIPK? More than likely. I don't know what the exact cause of it is, but it will only happen in colder weather. To stop it from making the noise just reve the engine, thats how I get mine to stop. I will admit that while I was on the highway one time it started with the foghorn, I decided this time I wouldn't push the peddle to stop it, well it actually acted like cruise control. My truck pased at 75mph for a good two minutes until it stopped. My guess is it has to do with three things:

1. FIPK
2. Cruise Control
3. Throttle body/cable

Anyone have any other ideas?

"Foghorn" Thats a way better description of what it sounds like, lol! All I have for intake mod is its gutted and I cut the filter housing so the filter is wide open but thats been done for a while. Your right it did start happening with the cold weather it seems. Im gonna do some more research for the "foghorn".
Keep em coming and thanks!
