That cylinder is a tough one to replace so Im sure labor costs were a big part of the cost. I think Mike Troyer sold 8 coil packs for $200 one time so that would be about $25 for the cost of one coil pack. You paid aproximately $300 for labor Im guessing.

Coil packs at the dealer are around a hundred bucks apiece. Your number four may be from the coolant hose above number four leaking a little causing the number four coil pack to go bad. If you have the 4.6, install a new hose clamp on the suspect hose.

that sounds kinda like a ripoff to me considering I got a tune up done on my truck (change all the spark plugs, adjust timing and idle, service battery), for like $310

But they probably charged like $85 for "diagnosing the problem", $100 for the coil pack, and then some insance amount for changing the coil pack.

Coil Pack #5

I just had #5 replaced today and it ran $150. $80 for the coil pack and $70 for labor and tax. This was at a local mechanic and not FORD service. Just to let you know this is the 2nd one I've had done....one @ 100K and this one @ 140K. If #4 is way in the back then it is definately a pain to get too.

Coil pack ( Autozone or O'reilly) about 60.00 , Dealership 96.00

18" extension and 10 minutes all done I have done about 10 of these so far and number 4 is a cinch with an 18" extension and a wobble socket in the spark plug size.

Aint Skeered!!!!

I work at a Ford dealer and it sure seems that you were overcharged for the coil and the labor. The coil retails for about $96, it is a Motorcraft part so the dealer cost is about half that amount (motorcraft parts have about 100% markup). And unless their labor rate is about $100 an hour, they overcharged you there also. I do however recommend using Ford coils not aftermarket. You may want to try a different dealer next time.

Coil Packs

I was having a "stumble" problem in my 2000 5.4 Lariat with 82,000 miles. After reading about other guys trouble shooting I determined it was probably a random misfire caused by a bad a coil pack. I just didn't know which one. The truck never threw a code, so I couldn't pin point which coil pack was bad. I figured if one could go bad after 82,000 miles another one could go bad at any time. I decided to replace them all.

I checked prices:
Ford Dealer - $108.00 per coil. Auto Zone was $49.00 per coil.

I went on Ebay and found 8 unused coil packs off a mustang engine (same coil pack part number) for $138.00.

I got the 8 coil packs from Ebay and installed them myself. I'm not a mechanic, but after reading the other guy's posts and buying a Haynes manual I was able to change all 8 out in about 2 hours.

1-4 (pax side) were a breeze. 5-6 (2 fwd on driver side) were also easy. 7 & 8 took some time.

It's great to be able to fix something on your own and save money to boot! I hadn't even heard the term "coil pack"
until I began researching the "stumble" i was experiencing.

This forum is great.
