4.6 to 5.4 swap
4.6 to 5.4 swap
I finally got around to swapping my 4.6 for a 5.4. I started Thursday and it was done Saturday evening. A lot of little things cropped up. Like torn gaskets etc...
It is a totally different truck. The 5.4 has tons of low end torque. Where I had ro rev the snot out of the 4.6 I can just ease off of the clutch and then hammer it and the tires smoke. Mike Troyer is working on a chip to handle the engine tuning and I should have it by some time next week. Any questions ask away.

Hi JMC. Long time no speak. Hope all is well.
I was wondering about a couple of things:
1. Did you have a tough time with the transmission ? Does it just bolt-up ?
2. What about the computer ? Was it a big deal with regards to wiring, compatability, etc. ?
I'm not contemplating this, but was wondering for knowledge sake...

The bell housing bolt patterns are the same. So the tranny bolts right up. The 5.4 has an 8 bolt crank so if your 4.6 is a Romeo motor it has only 6 bolts so you will have to get the Windsor 5.4 flexplate. My 4.6 was Romeo so I had to find a Windsor flywheel with 8 bolts. I used my 4.6 harness as the donor engine was from an automatic and some of the wires were cut off. If it would have been an Automatic with a 4R70W they would have been compatible. The 4.6 PCM is running the engine with my old custom Chip for now. Mike Troyer is in charge of programming my 4.6 PCM to meet the requirements of the 5.4. It is actually a simple bolt in swap.

JMC,
Did you stick with the 8.8" rear end or did you install the 9.75" that comes with the 5.4? I'm just wondering how long the smaller rear will last will all that additional torque. Any change in radiator? As I recall, the early 5.4's had a bigger radiator. I've owned a '97 with the puppy 4.6, then a '99 with a 5.4 (PI) and now an '02 4.6 liter The '99 was a killer. Hope all goes well for you!

I changed the 8.8 for a 9.75 over two years ago. Even with the 4.6 I managed to break it three times.
I changed to a 2 core rad last summer when my 1 core started to leak at the tanks.

There are no SES lights at all. There are DTC that are set though. SES is for emissions concerns. I have a P1000 Monitor Testing not complete. P1549 Intake Manifold Communication Control Circuit Malfunction. My 4.6 had the IMRC and the 5.4 doesn't so I left the connector unplugged. And one more that I forget having to do with the knock sensor.
Nothing major. I would not run a 5.4 with a 4.6 PCM unless you take precautions to not tax the engine nore rev past 4000 rpm. The 4.6 will be at its limit for supplying fuel so you will be running lean. You risk melting a piston. Having a chip burned to correct this is essential. I will be getting Air Fuel ratios to Mike Troyer as soon as possible so he can correct any problems. He is sending me a base chip so I can drive it till I get him the required data logs.

JMC - So the fact that i was using the 4.6 ECU for awhile on stock tune when my Edge was being programmed by PHP, kind of scares me based on what ya said. It was probably pretty stupid on my behalf but i did bring it past 4 grand several times. She seems ok but do you think i burned the rings pretty bad by doing so? Also, with the P1549 code, my 4.6 also had the IMRC, but PHP deleted it and now im getting the code again. What problems could this cause? It is now programmed for a 5.4 aswell on a 93 performance setting and we are having some issues. Let me know what ya think. Thanks!
