K & N Filters

I've been looking into the K & N system for a while. Two questions. #1 I just got the Flowmaster 70 series muffler. What should my next upgrade be. Chip modification or a Intake system?

The whole K&N system range from $200 - $240 on line. What will I get if I just replace the stock filter with a K & N filter? That is almost a differnce of $200 smacks Will I see any gas mileage or HP gain by short cutting it?

i have a 98 f150 i would recommened getting the whole unit. I have a the injection 2 kit and i could diffenently tell the difference. so if you are going to spend the money and get a k&n filter go with the whole kit and i would get that first because with the chip you really dont fell much difference because i haver them both in my truck and plus some things. That is just my 2 sense.

Kopez thanks for the info

What kind of change in gas milage change did you get with each upgrade.? In your opinon I should go with the intake first, then what? Give me a list in order of upgrades I should do. All opionions welcome!!!

Where is the best price for an intake kit?

i have a question for you first how did you get a pic of your truck on your question because i want to put a picture of mine?
First what size motor do you have? i dint get a huge improvement in gas milage but a few more miles. but i did get a pretty good kick with it. It put me back in my seat a little more than with the stock one on.

i have the 4.6 motor, and the mods that i have are have a bbk throttle body, helix power tower spacer, granatelli mass air flow censor, hyper tech power programmer, k&n injection kit, ceramic headers, electirc fan, pace setter exhaust from the cat back.

the way i think you should go after the intake is
1. throttle body
2. throttle body spacer
3. mass air flow sensor
4. headers
5. power programmer
thats the way i would do it but it depends on your budget, but i would also recommened the electric fan you can tell the difference/

I'm new to the F-150 side of things and would like to know where you'd go to find all of the things you listed (kopez) that you have on your truck. Used to just flipping through a MM&FF or 5.0 mag for a list of vendors for everything.
I've been running Mustangs since I could drive and the best rule of thumb I can give is to remember that the engine is basically a large air pump. The more air you can move in and out of it, the more power you are going to make. I'm not sure on the effects of a chip on a mostly stock truck, but the more mods you have first, the bigger the effect the chip would have as far as MPG, HP/TQ, etc.

All I have is the filter itself, and I am pleased with my gains in both performance and mileage from a cost standpoint of the filter. I put one on the truck right afetr I got it in 97, and it has paid for itself many times over in the money I saved in gas. The only problem I ever had with it was the rubber gasket coming aloose on the filter. The store that I bought it from replaced the entire thing, no questions asked. Overall, I might have gotten 3-4 extra hp from the filter, and probably 1-2 more mpg, but that's all I expected in a mod as simple as this. I have to say, besides the exhaust, it is one of the best mods I have done to my truck. If you are looking for more power, the FIPK is right for you, but for a very slight increase, just get the filter. Like I said, over the long run, mine has definately paid for itself.

_Japicker_ You only have the filter not the whole kit? Does it just fit inside the stock unit?

What manufacturer of each item did you go with, where did you find them, roughly how much $$ (both for item and then install), and what size of each (gears, exhaust tubing, etc) did you go with, if you please.

Curious about the shift kit, was is a kit or did you buy the whole valve body, and does it interfere with the elcetronic shifting of the tranny? I thought the computer handled the points and the force of the shifts? Still learning about the F-150 side of things, its a mite different than my '91 5.0

forget the K and N propaganda. they definetely flow better, but if you drive them in dusty conditions, dust gets through the filter.
that is why I removed the K and N's from both vehicles. dust in the intake duct after changing to the kand N's.

These are what I used on my 2000 5.4.

chip/tuner: Superchips; www.troyerperformance.com ; prices vary by model. I used the #1100 on my 2000 5.4 and currently own the #1714 and the #9100.

complete air intake: K&N FIPK; Summit; $225. They all have similar results, but I prefer 50-state CARB certification, plastic design to reduce heat soak like the factory setup, and long term reputation. I had no dirt in mine and rarely cleaned it because I always use an Outerwears cover on open filters.

exhaust: I tried JBA and Bassani shorty headers and don't recommend them based on my results per dollar. I chopped the entire exhaust off and ran a 3" mandrel bent single exhaust similar to the factory setup. This involved a 2.5" mandrel bent 90 degree bend added at the driver's side exhaust crossover; J.C.Whitney; $10. I added a Flowmaster 2)2.5"in/1)3"out universal Y-pipe; Summit; $30. This was welded to a 3" Dynomax Ultra-flow cat-back using only straight pipe; www.a-1performance.com ; custom kit; $300.

underdrive pulleys; www.aspracing.com ; $200

rear end gears; www.usgear.com ; $300 + installation kit.

electric fans; I tried several, I recommend this one: www.madenterprise.com/F150.htm ; prices on website.

shift kit/valve body; www.baumannengineering.com/aodecat.htm ; used in combination with a #1100 standard tune Superchips. I like to tailor my shifts. I recommend the FTVB now that it's available for the 4R70W; can be purchased at www.troyerperformance.com ; prices on website. Yes, the chip increases the shift firmness beyond the valve body calibration.

All items self installed.

A Note on the K & N and other oiled Air Filters

I installed a drop in Fram AirHog Filter. Same as K&N except orange and few dollars cheaper at Wallyworld.

I noticed an immediate difference in power and expected an increase in MPG as well. But after one tank of gas my MPG had dropped and the power seemed to dog back down.

In another tread where someone had mentioned a similar problem, I'd read that on a fresh or over oiled filter the Mass Air Flow sensor can get fouled with oil. And to clean it with a little Carburetor Cleaner.

I shot the MAS the next day and my power is back and so far the MPG is looking better too. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I fill-up.

Doug
