Break in period....

I know your suppose to break in your new car/motor, but when you go to the dealer to test drive they tell you to floor it to know how it feels. That can't be good on the new motor right?

It only takes 10 minutes to break an engine in properly. 30 minutes if it has a non roller cam. It is still wise to drive carefully just in case someone at the assembly plant was thinking about their cheating girlfriend instead of making sure their bolts were properly torqued, but if they assembled it correctly, you won't harm the vehicle.

I know it's not a pickup truck but .......... when I took a tour of the Harley Davidson assembly plant in York PA they put every new bike on a dyno and run it up to 100MPH before it gets shipped.

Hows that for a rude break-in?

I only ask because it would suck if my car was a "test drive car" that has been floored evertime a potential buyer came in.

By the time it gets to the dealer, it's been broken in.

The only key to a modern engine break in is to not drive at a constant speed for more than ten minutes at a time for the first 200-500 miles.

This by the way has very little to do with the actual "Breaking in" of the engine itself and more to do with all of the sensors/the PCM/Brakes/Tires/ETC.
