Bullitt4711,
This is not a "I disagree" post. Can you give web addressess on this testing you refer to? I have used Mobil one for such a long time that I may be blind to other possibilities but..... I also have 171,000 miles on this truck using Mobil One. I am however openminded to improvements if they are in fact improvements...

The problem with running long drain periods is not that the synthetic oil breaks down it is that fuel that blows by the pistons and other contaminents get into the oil. You should have no problem extending 2x - 3x your oil drains though but I wouldn't go years like people say on the Amsoil websight. Also, I agree with the others and I would stick to Mobil 1 or Amsoil; I would probably use Amsoil if it were easier to get.

Amsoil every 10,000 miles. Never a problem.

Use the best, you'll never be sorry.

Oil Viscosity

Back in 1996 when I was in Technical college(A&P School...aka Jet engine mechanic) we did a Viscosity test to see what oils broke down the fastest....& Quaker State & Pennzoil was the worst...I don't remember exactly what degrees it was, but every oil we tested was all within around 10 degrees form the best to the worst. We tested Mobil, Pennzoil, Havoline, Castrol, Valvoline, Quaker State, & Kendall. We tested no Synthetic oils...& remember this was back in 1996. I believe the order was...
1.Mobil
2.Kendall
3.Castrol
4.Valvoline
5.Havoline
6.Pennzoil
7.Quaker State

My Bimmer uses Mobil 1 0W/40 synthetic, and the factory recommended oil change is at every 15,000 miles!!! I of course don't wait that long, because most oil analysis say M1 is useful up to 10,000 miles, so I change at 7,500 miles myself.

As for my FX4, I change with Mobil 1 0W/20 at every 5,000 miles, but I could probably go a bit longer.

brahmus

brahmus, i actually live in minnesota! But, I play in a Cajun band here. We recently won the Prix Dehors award from the Cajun French Music Association in Louisiana. We played at the Blue Moon in Lafayette in August of this year. I have an "Acadian" accordion built by Marc Savoy of Eunice. I see you're from Lafayette. Been there enough times that I'm actually learning how to navigate around that town; no easy task. Obviously, I'm not a Cajun but I enjoy the music.

bob,

Bob do you change the oil every trip to Lafayette? Only about a thousand miles, right!
And is the filter hard to get to in your "Acadian". Do you use a Motorcraft?

Sorry, I just had to say something.

Gene

Mobil 1, every 5K, too F150's now, no problems!

I have the info, but I cant find it right now. I need to get some sleep, I have a long day of work tomorrow, but I will find it and get it for you.

Just to clarify... Mobil1 is great, and will protect your engine well. Amsoil just offers a bit "more" protection. There are better than Amsoil as well, I just stick with Amsoil for ease, but I am actually looking into putting NEO Synthetics in my 04. Everything I have read rates it higher than others. The ratings are AFSNA(I think...). Will get the info... If you are happy with Mobil1, great! For most people you will get great results! I just am always looking for the best. Who knows if I will ever notice a difference though.

Bro not to try and sink your RP ship. But i think you and RP are sleeping together. Now there you may get great and or better lubrication but in the real world oil is just that oil. Now if you have a 1 million dollar truck, car whatever then you should put liquid gold in there. I have a 66 merc comet with a 198 straight 6 with 305,000 miles on it and its never seen anything but 10w 30 cheapest stuff out there and it runs like a champ of course its a ford so it should. The love affair is over with this whole RP crap no insult intended but come on man slow down take a breath....

Never heard of "wast"ing money... But..

the vehicle only had 8k miles after 3 years, so it wasnt getting driven often enough to change it with 5k. Oil does get old.

Plues I get it at cost. Isnt a waste of money to me!

Everything I have read and heard, Synthetic does not get "old" so you should be safe going extended time frame.
