Switching to Synthetic at 64,000
Switching to Synthetic at 64,000
I bought a 2000 F150 with about 47,000 miles on it about 1 year ago. I have done regular oil changes (every 3,000 miles). The truck runs great and really doesn't use any oil. Now I am considering changing over to fully synthetic oil. Is this a good decision, if I switch over to synthetic what type should I use and will my truck continue to not use oil. The reason I ask this is because I tried a valvoline blended one time but my truck seemed to use it quicker.
Yes, Sythedic is better
Sythedic only is arifically made and its pure oil. In other words it has no elements mixed in it cause it is made by computers. Moble 1 Fully Sythedic is the best. I got 180,000 city miles on my Truck, and it is a Ford 1992 4.9L 300hp Engine. All I used is fully synthedic , not synthedic, Fully sythedic. It may be expensive but you can change the oil about 125,00 miles if you want cause it the techniction said you can. I change mine every 3 months and she still runs good only problem is the fuel pump and thats it.
So my Answer is Yes, because it is not cheap oil is good oil for your truck.

I switched from regular dino oil to Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic and my truck started using about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I switched to Amsoil 5w30 synthetic oil on the next oil change and the truck quit using/leaking/burning oil. Im a happy Amsoil customer at this time.
I would recommend an Auto-RX treatment prior to the change.
After that, brand doesn't really matter all that much, unless you plan to do extended drains.
As far as usage. What happens when you first change over is that syntheics usually contain more detergents and cleaning agents(known as esters). As the cleaning occurs, the sludge and varish is being removed that has built up, all of that crude is being blown past your rings or going into your oil filter. This is where you get the higher consumption, you will also notice the oil getting darker faster
Normally it will take 10,000 miles or more for your oil consumption to stabilize. After that you will probably use less oil during an oil change.
I use Amsoil and do not have to add any oil between filter changes ( I don't change oil) My filter changes are between 6 and 8 months and can range from 8,000-12500 miles. Right now I have about 6,000 on my current oil drain (I did finally drain my oil this year after 3 full years on the last drain)
I'll be doing a filter change around christmas time.
Good luck with your truck. I think the Auto-RX is the best solution to a dirty engine. Try it you will like it.
