what is
In Fords case it is where the different engines can share multiple parts. For example the 4.6 and 5.4 can share the same heads, and have in certain years of production. It is done purely to save money by Ford.

alexr40,
In a nutshell; The Modular engine is one that shares components across the different displacement. The 4.6, 5.4 V8s and 6.8 V10 share the same parts, The only difference in the engines is the displacement. The exception to the rule is the 4.6. It has a shorter block, crank shaft throw and connecting rods. The rest of the internal parts can be interchanged between the different engines. So for example you could take a piston from the 4.6 and use it in the V10. This dramatically reduces inventory costs for Ford because they don’t have to stock so many different parts.
