Question Engine shopping, How to tell 5.4 from 4.6?

Thinking of buying a 5.4 to build up. Say I find a mod motor removed from a vehicle at a junkyard, how can I tell if it is a 5.4 or 4.6?

Thanks.

I would say one of the best ways would be the 4.6 is normal spark plugs and the 5.4 is coils.

I thought some later 4.6s had coils too? Guess that's why I'm asking, don't know the difference .

What about Romeo/Windsor engines? Can you tell by counting valve cover bolts or flywheel bolts if it's a 4.6 or 5.4?

Any part numbers (block # etc) I could look at to tell?

Any measurements I could take?

OK, I have no part numbers or anything like that. I can only answer the above to the best of my knowledge. As far as I know, no 4.6's had coil packs. I haven't seen the 4.6l spark plugs, but if they are like some older Ford plugs, it's just spark plug wires over the boots. My coils have yellow "Motorcraft" tops, and a long boot. I'm sure theres more, I haven't changed my plugs for about a year.

And the Windsor engine was for the 351 and such until 96. Don't deem that fact, but I know the Windsor was used until 96, and I have never heard of it on any engine past that year when they switched to the Triton. I would be surprised if there was a Windsor 5.4l or anything to that sort.

I would start from scratch. If you want to build out your engine, you will be replacing a whole lot anyways. You could go the extra mile and get the newer/thicker block, and the best of everything. I still want to see a built, supercharged 3 valve.

The IAC on a 5.4 is at the rear of the throttle body elbow. The EGR tube is attached pointing to the passenger side Fender. Have a look at this pic of an intake manifold and you will understand.

The 4.6 got coils packs in 2000.

JMC said about the only way you can tell at a glance.

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.

Just to be sure, where does the EGR tube point on a 4.6? Firewall?

It points towards the front of the truck.

JMC

One thing to note. All the F-150 Triton engines have the throttle body pointing to the front of the truck. Unless it is a superduty then it is at an angle pointing towards the driver side.

Ok, first of all there are no 5.4 Romeo engine. All 5.4's are Windsors. The easiest way to tell them apart is to look where the alternator mounts. The 4.6's have 2 bolt holes and the top rail is flat. The 5.4's have 3 bolt holes and the top rail has a drop to it. Sorry I don't know how to post pictures on this site or I would. I have lots of pics of both the engines.
