Rough Idle, Grinding in Rear End, Check ENGINE light
Rough Idle, Grinding in Rear End, Check ENGINE light
Hi all,
Well recently I have been noticing a Grinding feel/sound in the rear end when I take turns, or at times, when I start moving from a dead stop. I especially notice it if I'm out in the intersection waiting to make a left turn from a stop.
Then, even more recently, within the last week, It has been so rough at idle that the truck kind of shakes, and the Check Engine light is on whenever the truck is running.
Earlier this year, I had a Spark Plug Syllenoid, (I think that's what it's called) replaced, along with that spark plug below it, and that solved my misfire problem... Before I had that done however, the Ford Stealer wanted to charge me like 800 + to change all plugs and syllenoids (if that's what they are called (above spark plug)), but instead of doing that, I had a local place just do the bad one for way less money... Anyhow, Any suggestions?
Is it time for new plugs, ect.. ?
And any advice on the rear grinding, it really is horrible, as so many things with my Navigator are ;(

Well as far as the rear end problem there a few things it could be. You could have a rear carrier bearing going bad, your limited slip (if your model is equiped with one) could be bad or just need some limited slip lube, or you could have a bad U-joint. You need to get it to a shop fast. The longer you wait, the potential for more things to mess is higher. As for your Check engine light, go to Autozone and have them scan your engine (its free). Write down what engine codes they pull up and post them on here. Dont buy any parts until you do. Most ppl at Autozone are morons. It sounds like you might have a vac. leak which is a common occurence for vehicles with a decent amount of miles on them. It could be as simple as a rotted rubber hose.
they are coils above your spark plugs not solenoids.
you also might be having the problem with coolant leaking onto the coils which your private shop might not know about. it's a 30 second fix. getting the codes read at autozone will help us tell you what is wrong.
now the gator has a ton of sound isulation are sure the grinding sound is coming from the rear? since you mentioned hearing it while making a turn you might have a bad cv joint.
let us know the codes.

Thanks spray and hcmq!
It really does sound like a joint, and yes, that's right, I had a coil Pack replaced.. b/c the dealer wanted to charger 800 for all of them to be replaced...
Tomorrow right after work i'll take it to AutoZone and have them scan and then come back and post the results...
I can't get the rear end checked until next week which means 4 more days of 1 1/2 hour round trips to work....
But next Monday first thing, i'll have the rear end checked..
The Abs light goes on and off sparatically (which may because of my 20 " rims/tires is what i'm thinking), and then my check susp light also comes on sparatically but less often then the ABS light.
On a good day, I have the Check Engine, ABS, Check Susp, Low Washer Fluid, and No Seatbelt light all lit at once and it's really pretty.. That's what I love about my Good Old Lincoln Navgiator, just an excellent vehicle without any problems... Asides from having to replace it's Transmission, blinkers, something on the rear end forget the name, Moonroof, and rear washer blade motor (needs replaced again),
Not to mention that it has been keyed twice all the way around, Once for $5K + and this recent time $3K even.

O.k. now I know more.
The grinding noise is prolly your suspension air compressor trying to re-adjust your gators height there is prolly a leak and that is why your check susp light keeps coming on.
It sounds like this truck was not well cared for. oh well let us know the codes as soon as you get them.

re
Apprently, the previous owner did not take good care of it at all...
I have babied this thing as if it were my child, i know that is scary, but true.. it still looks as though it just came off the lot, actually, better,, check the gallery.
The transmission wasn't my fault, nor was the rear end, as they say that it looked like it had been wearing for some time.
I'm almost totally possitive it's a misfire, (getting it taken in tomorrow and burrowing a diff car). But in the parking lot tonight i fired it up and listend and it goes, Thump thump,, thi thi thump, .. ect.. real Uneven misfired sounds comming from the exhuast, quite clearly, the exact problem I had last time, a bad coil pack..
Hopefully this takes care of the engine problem but I will know for sure tomorrow after work and let you guys know...
As for the rear suspension (having that checked tomorrow) and yeah, I have no idea, couldd be a leak, we'll see tomorrow.
Out for now,
JD

re
Gawd,
I couldn't get the truck in today b/c I didn't have a car to burrow, But last night the condition worsened. It is now so terrible that it idles at less then 500 rpm, and it usually is at about 750.
When I drive a little ways, and then put it into park it will idle at above 2000 rpms for a few seconds, then drop down so low it feels like it's going to die.
I am getting it in tomrrow, I just hope no damage is done between now and then... but it is difinately getting worse.
I'll stop by Autozone tonight and have the computer scanned then post the codes up on this tonight, so please check back if you can help with codes!
Will keep ya posted, ttyl, Thanks,
JD

update:
Okay all,
Got my truck back tonight.
1) fixed the Check Engine light it was a VACCUM LEAK that was causing it, just like I believe one of you said. Problem solved
2) Rear windshield wiper motor replaced and now works perfectly. Problem solved 200$ later
3) Changed out 20 " tirs/wheels and put the stock wheels back on with some real nice Rubber, can't think of the name right now. No more ABS intermitant light. Looks as though the diameter of my 20 " wheels/tires was smalller then the regular wheels and tires causing a timing isssue with the ABS system. Problem Solved
4) Hoping the tires/wheels would fix the grinding but no luck. Took the truck up to 75 on the high way and the wheels need balanced, no big deal, BUT, still that grind when I make turns... Almost like the rubber is skidding but this is definately not a tire issue. It's like a click click click sound that you make with your tongue when pretending to fire a machine gun... ..................yep there u just did it... for like 2 to 3 seconds..
going to get the Tires balanced and then see if I can have that rear end checked. I am driving to CA from CO next week so hoping I can get this all straightened out.
Thanks for the help guys and heads up about the Vaccuum leak.
