Fuel Injector problem
Fuel Injector problem
I was doing my first spark plug change on my '98 F150 5.4L today and have run across a problem. I had to remove the fuel injectors to access the coils. Well as I was putting the injectors back in, I noticed part of the plastic end cap was missing. I think a piece about 1/4" long fell into the F.I. port. If this piece did indeed fall into there, what problems will it have, especially if it goes into the cylinder? Will the heat of the engine completely melt it and there not be a problem? So far two injectors have fallen apart like that, but I can account for the piece on one of them. Also I believe some dirt fell into the spark plug holes, I dont think it'll be a problem.
Sorry for so many posts, just trying to figure out if I'm SOL. I was reading my Haynes Manual and figured out what broke off the injector was the "hat". It said if the plastic "hat" showed signs of wear to replace it. Are the "hats" replaceable? If so then I'm alright and just have to worry about the piece of plastic that MIGHT have fallen into the port.

Also it looks like i'm in the market for new fuel injectors. Know where I can find new ones for cheap? I searched on ebay, but not really sure what I'm looking for. I see tons of SVO ones, would they fit my truck? Also what size are the factory fuel injectors? Autozone has them for $65 a piece or so, but I'm on a budget and would like to have all new ones, or newer ones.
Look under the intake, down in the "valley" you might have lucked out and it will be there. If I were you I would pull the plug and hand turn the engine until it is about half way up to DTC. Get a piece of plastic hose about 3/8"th in diamater and get it attached to a vacume.wetvac. Stick it down the sparkplug port and start fishing. You might be lucky and snag it,at least draw some of the dirt out. As far as new injectors contact Mike Troyer at Performance Products. he has them for around 200 for a set of 8
Ok I'm at a crossroad. I can either replace all of the plastic tips on the injectors for about $60 and have Ford do a complete intake and F.I. cleaning for $130 OR replace all my injectors for around $200 as Texford said and clean my intake with Seafoam and T.B. cleaner. Suggestions? Would Seafoam hurt new injectors?

Texford, are you sure about the price on those injectors? I called Troyer Perf. and the ladies I spoke with didn't seem to sure of what I was asking for. One said that they had a set of 8 coil packs for a 5.4L for $200. I mentioned the website and that I just needed a set of 8 injectors for a stock 5.4L. She didnt sound too assuring to say the least. Have you or anyone that you know purchased the injectors before? If so do you recall the part #? I appreciate all the help.
P.S. Ford doesnt sell the plastic hats for the injector. The guy I spoke to at the dealership was wrong.

Go to www.jcwhitney.com
Work through their catalog. Looks like replacement injectors are going to run you about $45.00 each.

actually i looked on one of the links on the side of this post, and found 8 for $200 plus $40 for over night shipping. They charge a core charge thats $80 but just ship them my old ones and I'm ok. Not a bad deal.
Bought 8 rebuilt stock injectors for $240. I got them within 24 hrs. They came from Sunrise Carb. & Fuel Injectors. Not a bad deal if you're not looking to spend a lot of money. I have to ship my old injectors back to the guy, but I have no problem with that at all. rebuilt injectors from Autozone would have cost me almost $600 and new injectors from Ford would have cost me $915. If anyone is looking for a quick injector refresh, then I would recommend these guys.
