amsoil in my 2002 f150

Im going to use some amsoil and the bypass filter setup in my 2002 fx4 f150 with a 5.4. Any suggestions on viscosity? i have been reading that the 5w 20 is a little thin. so i want to use something better. Im in WI. so it does get cold. 5w30? 10 w 30? also what about using amsoil atf? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive noticed that there are diffrent kinds of 5w30 amsoil. what kind do i use for the 25000 change interval thing with the dual filter set up?

Series 3000 0w-30 would be best for long drain intervals and is recommended by Amsoil specifically for 5w-20 applications. This is probably their top oil right now. Very beefy additive package and I think there is a high amout of esters mixed in the base oil.

I presently have their 10w-30 ATM in my truck and it seems pretty good. The truck performs the same as when I was running Mobil 1 10w-30, but with much less engine noise.

i have been getting mixed messages then. i have a 2002 f150 and a guy that sells amsoil said use the 5 w 30 but not to use the 10 w 30....... i want to use the dual filter set up and he told me not to use the 7500; use the 2000 high performance 5 w 30.


so the 0w30 is that a little thicker oil? is 10 w 30 not a good idea? for my truck? it has the 5.4 and im in WI. so not as hot as texas or florida or whatever.

I'm running 10-40 in my 97 4.6, (15-40 in my 7.3 diesel) for years in MN now MT, have you gone to the Amsoil web site and tried tech support? your Amsoil dealer can also call tech support and get the answer direct. IMHO unless your really pushing the envelope with your truck, you won't notice much if any difference in the oil viscositys your considering.

I believe Amsoil's pour point is -60 degrees F...

I prefer 5W30 and I read that as it degrades it becomes closer to 5W20. What does 5W20 become?
Read the article above.... Maybe for petroleum poducts but not synthetic... petroleum has small and long chains of hydrocarbons the short chains (thin) tend to burn off first and leave the longer chains (thick) - Synthetic is made in the lab and is basicly all one size


Unless your using your truck for something different than was intended by the manufacturer. Use what they sugest....

Yadayada...

I would speak to someone with exprience.

Here is my 25,000 mile sample with the Dual Remote by-pass filter and the Series 2000 0w30.

If you are going to be putting some miles on this engine I would recommend the 0w30.

If your not. Then go with the 5w30/10w30.

If your running a by-pass filter and doing oil analysis. I wouldn't use the XL7500 stuff. For just a few cents more the normal 5w30ASL will work great in this truck.

Regarding the 10w30. It will work. I'm getting ready to put this in as a matter of fact. I don't do so many miles per year, and it's just too darned expensive running the 0w30 since I pay so much in makeup oil. If I were running 15,000-20,000 per year. I would stick with the 0w30.

well i guess my milage would be moderate. I just want the engine to last and not compromise milage too much.

I had an amsoil dealer tell me i should use the 5 w 30 diesel oil cause it has some more deturgents in it.

Im getting alot of mixed info here. I dont think i want to use 10w30...... and the 5w20 just seems too thin.

So im stuck between the 2000 series 5w30 the 5w30 diesel and the 0w30............and then again.......maybe the 2000 series 5w20. can anyone give me more info with what they used and how many miles they have etc?

Here is my choices best to worse.

#1 Series 2000 0w30
#2 Series 3000 5w30
#3 ASL 5w30
#4 ATM 10w30.


I have been using the 0w30 Since January of 2000. Which I've done only 1 oil change. That was when I put the dual remote system on August of 2001. My first oil change with the 0w30 was 18 months and 10,000 with only 1 filter change.

I recommend the 0w30 in 90% of applications. Unless cost is an issue, then I'll go with the ASL 5w30.

BTW they only make the 5w20 in the 7500 mile oil, which is not recommended for extended drains beyond 7500 miles.

and what about he 5w30 desiel? i hear thats the cheapest.

The Series 2000 0w30 and Series 3000 5w30(diesel rated) are the same price. They utilize the same higher ester based basestock technology along with a better additive package than the regular line that Amsoil carries.

Anyhow the cost difference is about $2.50 per quart at the retail level. Even at the wholesale level it's $1.90 more per quart.

Is it worth $2 more per quart? I don't know, I suppose if your running 20,000+ miles per year you might save the difference in fuel economy, but then again maybe not.

For me, I'll be running the 5w30/10w30 formulation becuase of cost.

Use S-2000 0w-30, Or S-7500 5w-20, 0w-30 for the remote 2-stage filters, 5w-20 with the sdf-11 standard filter.

I would not use the XL7500 line unless you want to stick with the exact manufacture recommendations and change your oil at 7500 miles or less. Even then you don't have to worry about using the SDF 11 filter. Any EOM filter will work.

If your not interested in putting on a by-pass filter but want to do extended drains. I would use the 5w30 ASL with the SDF 11 filter change your filter at 6 months or 7500 miles, and change the oil at 15,000 or 1 year, which is a conservative plan. With the by-pass filter change oil and filters according to oil analysis.
