Can't get rid of the Misfire...
Have you given up on me? I have completed everything that you have suggested, except going to the dealer and sending my coils to you for testing. (Thanks for that offer, by the way. It was wy generous!!!) It is now missing worse than it ever has. I am now thinking that it is a fuel delivery issue, for I do not see any black smoke coming from the exhaust. An Autozone trip today showed no codes
but I did get a suggestion that the throttle body may be dirty; sold me some cleaner -$2.17 - I'll try tomorrow night and report back....
OK, I think I'm on to something...A fellow at work had a Taurus that would not run on Exxon gas. Same symptons. His father had similar issues with Exxon and a Ford. His father discussed this with a Ford mechanic, and the mechanic said to change brands of fuel and you'll be OK. They did and were. I've been running Exxon to try to minimize my variables. Occasionally I would need to buy another brand for various reasons, usually around the time I was making another adjustment. Alas, my missing would go away for about four days - a tank of gas!!!. I am now on my second tank of Amoco premium and the misfires have been cut to nearly nothing. (Yes, I tried Exxon premium...) So, we'll find out in about a week or so if that's the fix.
Anyone else heard about this? I'll let you know my results.
Thanks

I don't suppose you'd be willing to take a roadtrip to south west Georgia, would you?
Damn, this one's a toughy...the truck really needs to be driven with a datalogger to see what exactly is happening when it starts missing. (That's the big money tests your dealer wants to tag you for) And it never set a MIL? The light never came on period? No flashing or anything?

Never has set a light... I have been running something other than Exxon gas for two weeks now, and no misses!!!
I think I have found it. I'm going to start a new thread about the fuel to see if anyone else has had issues...
Thanks for the offer. I may come down if that'll help!!!

So, I finnally took my truck to the Ford dealer. Computer hookup, testing, new #5 coil and $330 bucks later, they say it is repaired. I stopped my coil replacement at #4, big dummy. Thanks for all your help here.
There is a thread I posted in here a few years ago, that fixes a missing problem with the 5.4L engine. I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, so I figured I'd just post the link.
Enjoy.

engine miss
i have a 1997 f150 with 145000 miles on it i recently had a problem with it missing at an idle and under load over 45 and up to 90 i know alot of you guys have this problem i tried everything and i just got better little by little i changed the plugs and wires i put 8.5 mm msd wires that helped some, i fixed the heater hose that is right above the #4 spark plug, ford uses crappy clamps replace clamp, and i cleaned out the IAC, and last i zip tied the wire harness away from the air conditioning condeser put 3000 miles on it since with no problems not even a hicup....ill keep everyone posted
my trk was missing too and the dealer diag it and found that the wire to the sensor that is next to the a/c pump got a hairline slice cut into it by the belt they did not have time to fix it. But the tech told me just to splice, and rewire and zip tie the wire that this happend to and it should be fine, 15,000 mi later and running strong 2001 supercrew 4.6L

Yep. You're right. I stopped after the #4 change made teh miss go away for two weeks....I got disgusted and angry. Should have put my anger aside and trusted you fellas...Thanks again.
My 5.4L is missing now. I'm swapping my coils with a new one to try and find the bad coil. My question is, when the missing occurs, what exactly is happening to the electricity that is intended to be sent to the plug? Is the electricty arcing through the coil pack or is the electricty just not sent at all?
