How does a tachometer work?

A co-worker asked me how does a tachometer convert the revolutions of your engine into a sweeping motion on a guage? Anyone have a link to a site that explains this? I "Googled" this question and could not find anything.

Please note that there are many ways to create and drive a tachometer but here is one example...
