rear axle seal

After getting my oil changed yesterday i noticed my rear axle seal was seeping oil and the mechanic told me to keep an eye on it. After pulling the boat this weekend to the lakes i noticed oil over the side of the boat and on the side of my truck behind the wheel. At first i thought it was my dual exhaust and had me worried my engine was ****ting. But now that i look i see that it is seeping around the bottom side a few inches. How soon should i wait to get this fixed and does it take much to do it?

It sounds like it is leaking pretty bad. Id get it fixed ASAP and try not to drive the truck too much.

Look at the Other Drivetrain forum and you can get a general idea of what it takes.

Don't run the axle low on lube. Keep an eye on the brake condition of that wheel. The axle on the leaking side will have to be pulled to replace the seal.

I just changed this on my 86. It was not as hard as I had first thought. The drum was easy to remove since had been lubed with all the gear-oil.
